Leland Police crime report

Police responded to 113 Old Fayetteville Road at 7:31p.m. May 5in reference to a

report of a shooting.

According to Lt. Joseph Pierce, the suspect is a juvenile and is in custody.

The victim is recovering in the Intensive Care Unit at New Hanover Regional Medical Center.

“Due to the fact that this is an ongoing investigation, no other information can be released at this time, Pierce said in a statement.

 

Coastal Harmonizers showcase barbershop singing

By day, they’re ordinary men going about their business in non-matching shirts.

On Thursday rehearsal nights and beyond, they and their colleagues spiff up as The Coastal Harmonizers, a group of melodic men with a common interest in barbershop-quartet singing.

There’s nothing common about these guys, though. They’re invested in promoting four-part harmony throughout the world, especially in Brunswick County.

Little River Band plays Mayfest on Main on Saturday in North Myrtle Beach

Little River Band is scheduled to perform at the eighth annual Mayfest on Main festival this Saturday, May 11, in North Myrtle Beach, S.C.

The festival is 10 a.m.-6 p.m. on Main Street, between Hillside Drive and Ocean Boulevard. Highlights include live musical acts, street entertainers, arts-crafts and food vendors, a community stage and a children’s area.

Building materials make house affordable

BOLIVIA—Brunswick Housing Opportunity wants to make other homeowners jealous.

The BHO hosted an open house Friday of the first home built in Brunswick County with USDA rural development funding and touted the building practices—hurricane-proof walls, extra long-life roofing and solar panels to cut power costs—that will make the affordable housing attractive in the communities.

Sheriff's office seeks help with vehicle on video

The Brunswick County Sheriff's Office is asking for the public's help in identifying the vehicle or person in the attached photo.  This is a possible person of interest in the larceny of a tractor trailer that took place within the last two weeks from Wayne's Backhoe in Calabash. Anyone with any information should contact Detective John Holman at the Brunswick County Sheriff's Office 910-253-2777.

Wounded Warriors to participate in The First Tee Tournament

Four foursomes of Wounded Warriors will participate in the Future Generations Tournament -n June at St. James Plantation.
“We will once again have the honor of hosting our Wounded Warriors in the Future Generations Tournament, the largest charity golf event in the region with about 500 participants each year,” said Wayne Moody, tournament chairman. “Eight will come from Fort Bragg and eight will come from Camp Lejeune.”

Tips for grilling hamburgers for maximum flavor and juiciness

The oldest hamburger chain is White Castle, founded by a short-order cook and an insurance executive in 1921 in Wichita, Kan. It served steam-fried hamburgers cooked on a bed of chopped onions for a nickel.
The “Big Mac” was introduced in 1968. It was more expensive than a regular hamburger. Its price was 49 cents.
Even with all the fast-food chains serving hamburgers today, most of us still prefer grilling our own burgers. The fresh grilled taste just can’t be beat. When making a hamburger, the goal is to maximize flavor and juiciness.

Governor asks for flags to be flown at half-staff today

North Carolina Gov. Pat McCrory has ordered all state flags to be lowered to half-staff from sunrise to sunset on Friday, May 10, in honor of N.C. Senator Calvin Coolidge Murrow. Senator Murrow passed away on April 30. A memorial service will be held in his honor on Saturday, May 11, in Southport.

What a week in current events

Sometimes we don’t even recognize this country.
This week there was plenty to make us wonder.
•We were incensed to discover the IRS has been targeting groups and/or individuals with conservative ties.
This is blatantly wrong, no matter what political beliefs one has.
We don’t trust the administration to do an objective investigation, as promised.
The sad thing is we don’t trust Congress to do the investigation, either.

Sluggish backwater bite

The backwaters surrounding the Ocean Isle Beach area have not been producing the kind of action expected for this time of year.
The flounder bite has been on and off with only a few good fish biting a hook. Red drum and black drum have gotten picky in their feeding habits. Trout seem to be spread all over the place, making them hard to target. I can only speculate that the back-and-forth weather patterns have continued to play a role in making our resident fish sluggish and slowing down the flow of migrating fishing into our waters.
