Writer examines the history of East Coast beach music, local personalities

Write what you know.

Author Howie Thompson gave that advice to aspiring writers last Thursday at Sunset River Marketplace in Calabash, where he was speaking as part of the gallery’s Coffee with the Authors series.

However, Thompson wanted to write about beach music, and to follow his own advice, he had to spend a lot of hours researching and interviewing for his two books.

Little River Band plays Mayfest on Main on Saturday in North Myrtle Beach

Little River Band is scheduled to perform at the eighth annual Mayfest on Main festival this Saturday, May 11, in North Myrtle Beach, S.C.

The festival is 10 a.m.-6 p.m. on Main Street, between Hillside Drive and Ocean Boulevard. Highlights include live musical acts, street entertainers, arts-crafts and food vendors, a community stage and a children’s area.

Finally, good news

April was the best month in five-and-a-half years for sales of new cars and trucks in North Carolina.
Sales were 11.8 percent ahead of the same period last year—the best month for new car and truck sales since August 2007.
 “Vehicle sales are returning to pre-recession levels,” Robert Glaser, president of the North Carolina Automobile Dealers Association, said. “April was the best month since before the recession, and we are optimistic that sales will continue to grow over the next few months.”

First Tee academy now open

The new $1.5 million Carolina Life Skills and Leadership Academy is open for business and teens are invited to sign up.
On the 28-acre campus of The First Tee of Brunswick County, just outside Shallotte, the 9,000 square-foot academy will be host to a series of four-day and four-night summer academies in character education through The First Tee’s life skills and core values curriculum.

Commissioners deserve praise

To the editor:
On May 6, county commissioners proclaimed May as Mental Health Month. Hooray. What an outstanding group of leaders we have to recognize the importance of standing up in support of mental health when so many individuals stick their heads in the sand and are afraid to discuss the subject as taboo.

Ex-Trojan Gause pitching for Walters State

 Former West Brunswick pitcher Jay Gause finished the regular season 7-5 with a 3.34 ERA for Walters State Community College, an NJCAA Division I team. Gause, a sophomore, pitched 72.2 innings, third most on the team, and averaged 10 strikeouts a game.

Walters State is 35-16. It is 18-1 at its home field in Morristown, Tenn.

Mother's pride at Marine ceremony connects timely days in May

Quantico is a base and place I’d never visited, a chance to venture onto restricted United States Marine Corps territory (with the proper credentials) to tend to important Marine business.

With Mother’s Day just around the bend, Sgt. Alex, my Marine son, was about to graduate to become an embassy guard, along with a class of more than 100 fellow graduates destined to embark on assorted lifetime adventures throughout the world.

To the editor:
Moving away from the area of Calabash after four years and living at The Farm brought many cherished memories for us; however, I now have much sadness because I lost my husband, John, on April 27.
John loved golf and the friendships he made at the Carolina Shores Golf Course, plus the many other friends he made while living here.
So I will be moving to Vermont where my daughter lives, and I will also be near John’s family. They live in New Hampshire where John was born on Jan. 4, 1941.
