Calabash EMS open house Saturday

Calabash Volunteer EMS will have an open house 1-5 p.m. this coming Saturday.

The open house will take place at the EMS station at 9031 Beach Drive in Calabash. The public is invited.

Summer is here, and many citizens are already enjoying spending time in the water. Sadly, we have already lost several individuals in our area to drowning accidents. I would like to offer some tips for water safety for both swimming pools and the beach.

For the swimming pool:

•If no lifeguard is on duty, make sure children are accompanied by an adult who is familiar with CPR and life-saving techniques.

•For your home pool, post CPR instructions and 911 reminders on signage around your pool

Mann pitches West Black to...

 The West Black beat South Columbus 7-3 in a non-conference baseball game June 18 in Shallotte.

West scored five runs in the bottom of the third. With one out, Dalton Mann reached on an error. Erick Hill singled. They advanced on a double steal. Tyler Stanley singled home a run. Zack Johnson singled to right field, scoring a run. Brett Babson walked, loading the bases. Connor Durham grounded out, but a run scored, giving West a 3-0 lead.  Tristan Lewis then reached on an overthrow of first base and two runs scored on the error.

It is rare that I am so overcome with emotion that I cannot speak. Chatty by nature, I believe that my family sometimes screens my calls to avoid getting “hung up” in a two-hour conversation.

But at West Brunswick’s graduation last Saturday, I experienced one of those rare moments; I was so overcome with emotion, I literally couldn’t get the words past the lump in my throat.
