Sixth annual event seeks to ‘...

Saturday, Sept. 30 will mark the sixth annual Let’s Ride Domestic Violence Out of Town Awareness Rally, held by Hope Harbor Home.

This year’s event will start at Beach House Harley-Davidson on U.S. 17 on the south side of Shallotte.

On-site pre-registration will start at 9 a.m., with kickstands up at 10 a.m. Riders will be escorted by the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office.

Health Fair events offered in Ash

The Roosevelt & Ruth Educational and Recreational Foundation will host a series of community health events to encourage healthy living and wellness beginning Saturday, Sept. 30, at 2 p.m. at the church fellowship hall at 5213 Little Prong Road in Ash.

The Northern Brunswick County Services Coordinating Council (NBCSCC) is hosting a Community Services Expo on Saturday, Sept. 30, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Leland Cultural Arts Center, 1212 Magnolia Village Way.

This will be a networking opportunity for more than 20 local agencies to speak with people who need services, whether physical, financial or emotional, as well as informing potential new volunteers of the many ways they can make a difference to people in Brunswick County.

How was your hurricane weekend?

A little more than a week ago, I had the chance to break out on a long weekend and bounce up and down the East Coast on a four-day trip that took me to two of the biggest cities in the U.S.: New York City and Clemson, S.C., on a football weekend.

A couple years ago, I lived out a childhood dream of going to New York to catch David Letterman’s show before he finally closed up shop and grew a giant, white beard.

On this trip, I was again reliving my youth by going to see guitar legend Eric Clapton at Madison Square Garden.

NCDEQ issues Holden Beach...

The North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality issued a swimming alert for the public beach access on the east end of Holden Beach on Friday and lifted the alert the next day.

A Friday NCDEQ news release says state water quality officials are alerting the public that initial testing at the site showed levels of bacteria “exceeding the state’s and Environmental Protection Agency’s recreational water quality swimming standards.”
