Search suspended for suspected...

A 21-year old vacationer from Ohio is suspected to have drowned in Lockwood Folly Inlet off Holden Beach Tuesday night.

Holden Beach Police Chief Wally Layne said the victim was with a church group from the Columbus area that brought more than 300 visitors to the island this week.

“It’s not the way we wanted to start the season,” he said.

Layne informed town officials during Tuesday night’s town meeting emergency services began searching for the swimmer around 5:30 p.m.

The Beach Boys have signed on to play their first Brunswick County coastal gig at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 29, in Odell Williamson Auditorium.

Mike Sapp, manager of the auditorium at Brunswick Community College, said tickets are $69 and will go on sale at 9 a.m. next Monday, May 13, at the auditorium box office or online at www.bccowa.com. There will also be 50 special VIP tickets sold for the first three rows and a meet-and-greet with The Beach Boys’ lead vocalist/songwriter Mike Love for $152. All seats are reserved, Sapp said.

Native restaurateurs claim...

CALABASH—When it comes to use of the business names “Miss Calabash” and/or “Mrs. Calabash,” who’s got the right?

According to two longtime Calabash restaurant owners, nobody has the right but them.

Cousins Shaun Bellamy and Crystal Coleman-Nixon, respective owners of Ella’s and Beck’s and Coleman’s Original Calabash restaurants, said they recently filed for trademark rights to the names.

Their action came after learning owners planned to name a new restaurant in town “Miss Calabash.”

Sheriff's office seeks help...

The Brunswick County Sheriff's Office is asking for the public's help in identifying the vehicle or person in the attached photo.  This is a possible person of interest in the larceny of a tractor trailer that took place within the last two weeks from Wayne's Backhoe in Calabash. Brunswick’s secondary schools...

Middle and high school students will have to set their alarms an hour earlier next school year.

Brunswick County School board members voted 3-2 at their meeting Tuesday night to send secondary students, grades 6-12, to school before elementary students when the school system returns to a staggered start schedule in the fall.

Burned building remains in...

CALABASH—Remains of burned-out businesses on Carter Drive have yet to be removed because of insurance issues.

Building owner Marylyn Watson said Tuesday she is awaiting word from her insurance company to determine when the charred remains can be removed.

The 28-year-old building housing the 947 Bistro and Pub and three other businesses was destroyed by a fire that broke out in the early morning hours of March 18. Investigators determined the fire originated at the rear of the restaurant.

The Brunswick County Master Gardener Volunteer Association is having its second annual spring plant sale May 9-11 at the Brunswick County Government Center in Bolivia.

Hundreds of colorful plants have been planted, and more shrubbery and trees will be brought in from local nurseries for this sale.

Many plants will be suitable for Mother’s Day gifting. Wrapping and bows will also be available for a nominal fee.

Sale hours are 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Thursday and Friday and 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday.

Sunset Beach police officer fired

A Sunset Beach police officer has been fired for giving conflicting information in a court case.

Sunset Beach Police Chief Lisa Massey terminated Sunset Beach Police Officer Jamie Clemmons’ employment with the town on May 1.

Clemmons’ departure had to do with his testimony related to his May 11, 2012, arrest of Patricia Barbour of the Seaside community on driving while impaired charges. After discrepancies in this and four other DWI cases involving Clemmons were discovered, each was dismissed last week by District Attorney Jon David.

Beacon is wrong on voter ID

To the editor:
The Beacon seems to believe voter ID is not an important issue and legislators should have been spending more time on other issues instead of voter ID. I find that position disturbing.
But even more disturbing is the reporting. How is it that you give the NAACP a voice and you don’t provide any voice from the right? The North Carolina Federation of Republican Women and the local chapter have strong views concerning the need for voter ID, including the need for photo ID.
