Sheriff's office seeks...

The Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office is seeking a 21-year-old Shallotte man.

At around 2 p.m. Tuesday, deputies attempted to serve felony warrants to Tyler Gray Hughes, 21, at 375 High Hills Drive in Shallotte.

When officers arrived at the residence, Hughes fled into a wooded area behind the residence. At that time, Hughes’ pit bull named “Beast” charged Deputy Andrew Lentz. When the dog was about five feet from him, Lentz fired two shots, killing the animal instantly.

Shallotte teen arrested for...

A Shallotte teenager has been arrested for the murder of a 4-month-old child.

Randy Lee Richardson, 19, of Pelican Place in Shallotte was brought into custody at about 1:45 a.m. Wednesday for the May 28 murder of 4-month-old Colton Richardson.

He is being held without bond at the Brunswick County Detention Facility.

More details will be released as they become available, according to a press release issued Wednesday by the Brunswick County Sheriff's Office.

Woodard

Alan and Melanie Woodard of Supply are the proud parents of a son, Bryce Alan Woodard, born at 10:09 a.m. April 15 at New Hanover Regional Medical Center, weighing 6 pounds, 14 ounces and measuring 19 3/4 inches in length.
He joins a brother, Riley, age 8.
Maternal grandparents are Lana Caudill and Tracey Horne of Supply.
Paternal grandparents are J.C. Guyton and Mark Woodard of Supply.

Holden Beach couldn’t have asked for a better person to discover an unexploded shell in the sand.

Gerald Workman, who unearthed a Civil War-era Parrott shell there April 8, knows all about munitions handling.

He spent 13 of his years in the Marines as a munitions expert and served in Kuwait during Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm making sure ammunition got where it was supposed to be.

“I’ve handled most (types of) ammunition as an explosives officer,” Workman said.

Sunset Beach meeting continues...

SUNSET BEACH—Minutes after convening, two town council members called to adjourn the monthly Sunset Beach Town Council meeting Monday night when Mayor Richard Cerrato tried to read a statement calling for an external investigation related to a police officer’s recent firing.

Cerrato was referring to the May 1 firing of town police officer Jamie Clemmons, whose employment was terminated by town police chief Lisa Massey for giving conflicting information in a court case.

Last Friday, Sal Rubio’s day started out anything but glamorous.

“It was an average day,” he said. “I took the kids to school, had to take two sick cats to the vet, and then I came home to a broken air-conditioner and had to take care of that.”

But by 5 p.m., Rubio was dressed and ready to film scenes for the movie “Tammy,” a comedy based on the screenplay by Melissa McCarthy and her husband, Ben Falcone.

Storm delays last day of school

June 7 was scheduled to be the last day of school for students, but thanks to Tropical Storm Andrea that date will now be Monday, June 10.
Brunswick County Schools will be closed for students and school personnel Friday, June 7, according to a press release issued Thursday by schools spokeswoman Jessica Swencki.

Storm spurs cancellations

Due to the approach of Tropical Storm Andrea, Brunswick County Schools will be closed Friday, and the last day of school has been postponed until Monday, June 10. Brunswick County Academy’s graduation has been rescheduled as well, from Friday to 6 p.m. Monday, June 10, at the Virginia Williamson Events Center at Odell Williamson Auditorium at Brunswick Community College.
In addition, the free summer concert for Friday, June 7, in Ocean Isle Beach has been cancelled.

Brunswick County tunes into...

The season for summer concerts and movies is under way at the beach and beyond. Brunswick County’s free concert and movie series is set for the spring-into-summer season for 2013.

New this year is a Thursday series in Calabash, where concerts will take place on Thomasboro Road and movies shown in the town’s new Calabash Community Park at the corner of Persimmon Road and Traders Lane.

More of the series is in store in Ocean Isle Beach, Shallotte, Holden Beach, Sunset Beach, Leland and Southport.

McIntyre denounces MSA decision

U.S. Congressman Mike McIntyre is strongly denouncing a decision by the U.S. Office of Management and Budget to exclude Brunswick County from the Wilmington Metropolitan Statistical Area.

“OMB’s decision makes no practical, economic, or common sense,” McIntyre is quoted in a press release issued Wednesday.

“Anyone who knows our region understands that Brunswick County is part of the greater Wilmington area and not part of South Carolina,” McIntyre said.
