Search suspended for suspected...

A 21-year old vacationer from Ohio is suspected to have drowned in Lockwood Folly Inlet off Holden Beach Tuesday night.

Holden Beach Police Chief Wally Layne said the victim was with a church group from the Columbus area that brought more than 300 visitors to the island this week.

“It’s not the way we wanted to start the season,” he said.

Layne informed town officials during Tuesday night’s town meeting emergency services began searching for the swimmer around 5:30 p.m.

Dismissal sought for Sea Trail...

The bankruptcy administrator for the Eastern District of North Carolina in Wilmington has filed papers with the court to dismiss the Sea Trail Corp. bankruptcy case.

A hearing is scheduled for 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 21, in room 208, 300 Fayetteville St. in Raleigh.

People whose rights may be affected in the case are urged to view documents for the bankruptcy case, No. 11-07370-8-SWH, available at the bankruptcy administrator’s office or on the court’s web page at www.nceb.uscourts.gov.

Beach Boys tickets catching fast...

Tickets are selling briskly for The Beach Boys' upcoming debut concert in Brunswick County.

Tickets for the Aug. 29 concert at Odell Williamson Auditorium at Brunswick Community College went on sale Monday.

Auditorium manager Mike Sapp said Tuesday there were only about six remaining VIP tickets, but otherwise still plenty of really good tickets available for the upcoming performance featuring Beach Boys veterans Mike Love and Bruce Johnston.

Sapp is anticipating a concert sell-out and advises buying tickets now.

Brunswick sheriff has a new son

Brunswick County Sheriff John W. Ingram and his wife Michelle are parents of a newborn son.

The baby, named Tison, was born Monday, May 13, at Novant Health Brunswick Medical Center, Ingram’s dad, Billy, said Tuesday.

All are doing well, and the baby is “beautiful like his grandfather,” Billy Ingram said.

The new baby is Sheriff Ingram’s fourth son.

Boiling Spring Lakes police...

Two Brunswick County men were arrested Monday in Boiling Spring Lakes on charges related to a prostitution investigation that began in November 2012.

Kyle Bradley Wolf, 20, 1911 Robin Road, Boiling Spring Lakes, and Shawn Christopher Conley, 20, North Twin Lakes Drive, Southport, were both charged with two counts of promoting prostitution of a minor, Boiling Spring Lakes Police Chief Brad Shirley reported.

Wolf and Conley are being held in the Brunswick County Detention Center.

Shirley said Wolf was arrested Saturday.

Deputies to speak at Calabash...

Deputies with the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office are scheduled to speak at the Calabash town board of commissioners meeting Tuesday night.

The meeting starts at 7 p.m. May 14 at Calabash Town Hall on Persimmon Road.

Deputies will be on hand to answer questions from citizens about law enforcement in the town.

Drowning victim’s body recovered...

A drowning death in the Lockwood Folly Inlet may lead to Holden Beach erecting a warning sign on the beach where the accident occurred.

The body of the Ohio man who drowned while visiting Holden Beach was recovered early Sunday morning, May 19.

Kwesi Sample, 21, a member of the Xenos Christian Fellowship of Columbus, Ohio, a group that has visited Holden Beach for several years, drowned May 14 while attempting to swim the Lockwood Folly Inlet from Holden Beach to Oak Island.

Budget, administrator on Sunset...

Sunset Beach Town Council will have its monthly work session at 9 a.m. Tuesday, May 21, in the town hall conference room.

Council will discuss the proposed 2013-2014 budget.

Council is also scheduled to discuss determining what traits, characteristics, skills, education, experience and special qualifications are desired in the next town administrator. 

Commissioners resolve to...

As clerk to Brunswick County’s board of commissioners, Debby Gore typically doesn’t let anything get by her before, during or after a meeting.

Recording the minutes is part of her job, after all.

But the board members and administrative staff conspired to slip a special resolution into the May 6 agenda.

Chairman Phil Norris presented Gore with a plaque recognizing her selection as Clerk of the Year by the North Carolina Association of County Clerks, and the board voted unanimously to approve the resolution.

County eliminates extra corridor...

Business development won out over corridor development at Monday’s Brunswick County Commissioners’ meeting.

Two-dozen property owners of land along U.S. 17, N.C. 211, U.S. 74/76, N.C. 130, N.C. 133 and N.C. 904 attended the May meeting in hopes board members would strip away corridor-development standards.

They are additional development standards beyond basic property zoning for non-residential, multi-family and mobile-home parks that were part of Brunswick County’s Unified Development Ordinance.
