New county manager shuffles...

Ann Hardy has barely had time to change offices since she was hired as county manager two weeks ago, but is already making changes to the county departments.

At Monday night’s county commissioners meeting, the board approved reorganizing several county departments, beginning with Health and Human Services.

The Health Department and Department of Social Services boards were consolidated by the commissioners in September 2012

West Black sweeps Laney in...

 The West Black opened its Central Carolina Summer Scholastic League season by beating Laney in a doubleheader June 11 in Shallotte. Below are game summaries.

Carson Tew threw a two-hitter as the West Black opened its summer baseball season by beating Laney 3-1 in five innings in the first game of a doubleheader. Tew struck out four and walked none.

Students can ‘Dig Into Reading’...

If you’re worried about your children being bored this summer, Kelly James has the answer: Get them to pick up a book.

James, a library assistant at Rourk Branch Library in Shallotte, is in charge of youth services. One of her major projects is the library’s summer reading club.

The summer reading club is a countywide initiative, targeting children ages 4 to 12 to keep them reading through the summer so that they don’t lose reading skills acquired during the school year.

 West Brunswick senior Trevor McKenzie, who has signed a letter of intent to play football at Wingate University, knows it is possible to blossom as a football player. West graduate Nick Napolitano is the example: He has worked his way to become a captain of the Wingate football team, excelling in academics and football.

Summer concerts, movies at the...

Brunswick County’s free concert and movie series is set for the spring-into-summer season for 2013.

New this year is a Thursday series in Calabash, where concerts will take place on Thomasboro Road and movies shown in the town’s new Calabash Community Park at the corner of Persimmon Road and Traders Lane.

More of the series is in store in Ocean Isle Beach, Shallotte, Holden Beach, Sunset Beach, Leland and Southport.

Long perseveres, will play...

 Talking about the future, Abbey Long thought about the past.

If it were not for her eighth-grade soccer coach, Chris Sanders, Long may have never played soccer in high school.

“He was my first soccer coach,” Long said. “I thank him for helping me and pushing me to become what I am today.

Fortified with confidence, Long played soccer at West Brunswick. Last season, she made second-team all-conference. And now she has signed a letter of intent to continue her career at Cape Fear Community College.

Sunset Beach crime report

The Sunset Beach Police Department is investigating larceny of money from a local business.

On June 5, it was reported a woman came into Bill’s Seafood on Sunset Boulevard, hit the no-sale button and removed money from the cash register.

The theft of golf clubs was reported June 7 at Sea Trail. Two men had gone inside Jones-Byrd Clubhouse when someone took off in their golf cart, which had two sets of golf clubs in the back. The golf cart was later recovered, but the golf clubs are still missing, Sunset Beach Police Chief Lisa Massey said.

Quick thinking weather boy earns...

When a tornado touched down in Varnamtown on Friday, it was a moment one resident has prepared for almost his whole life, all eight years of it.

The National Weather Service reported an EF-0 tornado—based on the Enhanced Fujita (EF) scale used to rate the strength of tornadoes based on the damage they cause—touched down near Varnamtown along Stone Chimney Road at 1:22 a.m. Friday, June 7. While the tornado was rated on the weak end of the scale, winds were estimated at 70 mph, trees were downed, and there was some damage.
