Is it worth the cost of...

The rising cost of food is affecting everyone. Some folks are trying to beat these costs the old-fashioned way—by growing and preserving food at home. This may save money for some, but not for everyone.
The other day I stood behind a woman at the checkout at one of our local discount stores. She was obviously planning on making jam. She had several packs of brand new jam jars and lids, a couple bags of sugar and powdered pectin. Her bill was close to $50 and that didn’t include the fruit. You can buy a lot of jam for that amount of money.

OIB board scales back on...

Ocean Isle Beach bathrooms should come and go in the summer like the tourists, according to residents.

At the OIB town meeting Tuesday morning, smaller and temporary facilities were preferred to larger and permanent toilets.

Town administrator Daisy Ivey said town staff looked at plans for either a stick-built facility or a portable trailer-type restroom, similar to the facility on Sunset Beach.

Commissioner D.B. Grantham asked how many bathrooms Sunset Beach’s restroom trailer included.

Leland proposes $1 inspection...

Leland’s financial plan for 2013-14 is willing to risk the status quo to draw in business and developers.

Town Manager David Hollis presented the budget message to commissioners May 16, announcing town officials plan to reduce building permit fees “dramatically” to just $1.

“We can use building inspection service as (public relations) for the town and invite builders into the town,” Hollis said. “Building permits would be essentially free.”

Spring onions are genetically identical to the common onion, but they look and taste differently because they are planted very close together and harvested prematurely to give a milder flavor than a common onion.
Though spring and green onions are often used interchangeably, there is a difference between them. Spring onions have larger leaves and are harvested after a small bulb has formed. Green onions are harvested before any bulb has formed.

It’s that time of year for the Mostly Bluegrass Spring Festival.

This year’s ninth annual festival is taking place 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday, May 25, in Riverside Park on Main Street in Shallotte (farmers market site behind the Brunswick County Chamber of Commerce).

Highlights include arts and crafts, food and produce vendors and area bands and musicians in the jam tent.

 West Brunswick’s baseball season ended in a 7-6 loss to D.H. Conley in the fourth round of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association Class 3A state playoffs May 21 in Shallotte.

D.H. Conley (25-2) will play Orange in the Eastern Regional. West finishes 20-5.

CIS hosts fifth annual Big Toy...

SOUTHPORT—Trucks, planes, cars and trains took center stage as Communities In Schools of Brunswick County hosted Big Toy Day at the Cape Fear Regional Jetport last Saturday.

About 1,400 people attended the fifth annual Big Toy Day. More than 70 exhibitors participated, including the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office, the Oak Island Police Department, Yaupon Beach Fire Department, Oak Island Fire and Rescue and the U.S. Coast Guard.

What a wonderful 50-year celebration the town of Sunset Beach had on the beach this past Saturday. It was nice to see all the improvements at the gazebo and to have the opportunity to enjoy such a nice meal while enjoying the crowds on such a perfect day. So glad we live here!

Carolina National to install new...

It’s a hard decision for course owners, club managers and golf course superintendents.
Installing new greens is a process that doesn’t happen overnight. The whole course (or at least nine holes) must be closed for several weeks or months. There is disruption of play and lost revenues. Dues-paying members must live with fewer tee times during the renovation process. Instead of teeing off in the morning, they sometimes must play in the afternoon.
