    Our mystery plant may not be familiar to you, because it is fairly uncommon. You will surely know the family to which it belongs, however: the philodendron family.

    BOLIVIA — Standing 17 hands high, his solid black coat like satin in the morning training ring, Albert the imported Friesian stud stallion is a mighty sight.

    When trainer Lauryn Zepeda approaches her latest equine student with a visitor, Holland-born Albert ambles over toward the gate to greet them, then settles back on the other side to graze and await his new teacher.

    “Look what I’ve got,” Zepeda says, offering Albert a few pellets of grain with an extended hand upon entering the ring.

    Blackwater Rhythm & Blues will perform at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 14, at Rourk Gardens on Main Street in Shallotte.

    The movie “Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs 2” will be shown starting at dusk Thursday, Aug. 14, in Calabash Community Park.

    Jim Quick & Coastline will perform at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 15, in the parking lot of the Museum of Coastal Carolina in Ocean Isle Beach.

    Southport Oak Island Animal Rescue is taking entries for its pet calendar contest.

    The contest is open to any pet — dog, cat rabbie, snake, pig, goat, etc. — and is not limited to the Southport/Oak Island area.

    Rules and entry forms can be printed off at the SOAR website at www.soar-nc.org under the events tab.

    Anyone owning a business who would like to advertise in the calendar can buy a business-card-size ad for $10.

    The origin of Jaded Mayberry is “kind of a long story,” says Will Hickman, leader and lead singer of the popular local band whose repertoire covers everything from AC/DC to Zac Brown.

    It dates back to the days when he and lead electric guitarist Seth Gearhart were roommates and played together in a praise band in Shallotte.

    Let’s go to the movies.

    Everybody will know this plant as “The Sound of Music’s” ticket to five Academy Awards, the plant that Maria and the Von Trapp Family were so crazy about. Not only for them, but it was also the favorite flower of Emperor Franz Josef of Austria, Germany’s Kaiser Wilhelm, and Ludwig II, who built those fairy-tale castles in Bavaria.

    It’s kids’ movie time for another summer.

    Now that school is out, Coastal Cinema 10 at 5200 Bridgers Road in Shallotte has once again launched its seasonal Summer Kids’ Movie Series.

    Movie showings are at 10 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays through Aug. 21.

    Admission for all ages is $1 per person. Admission is subject to seating availability, and groups are welcome.

    Local author Joan Leotta has released her third digital book in the Legacy Honor Series.

    “A Bowl of Rice,” from Desert Breeze Publishing, deals with nurses in Vietnam, Leotta said.

    It focuses on Anna Maria O’Shea, who becomes a nurse to continue her family’s Legacy of Honor. Choosing to stick to her commitment to service, she loses her long-time college love. The pain of war proves stronger than her private heartache.

    Fourth of July fireworks: Events...

    Area events celebrating the 238th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence are already taking hold, starting with the launch of the nearly-as-old North Carolina Fourth of July Festival this weekend in Southport.

    Events in the historic seaport town begin with the N.C. Freedom Run/Walk and opening ceremony Saturday morning, June 28, at Waterfront Park and continue into the following week, until the Fourth of July Festival fireworks finale at 9 p.m. Friday, July 4, on the Southport waterfront.
