They’ve been sewing, baking, walking, beach-combing and visiting local places.

Last month, Dee and Jon Caudle of Ocean Isle Beach convened their second annual Grandparents Camp in Brunswick County with their four visiting grandchildren, and a good time was had by all.

SHALLOTTE—Every day of the year, not just on the Fourth of July, one Shallotte store proudly flies a flag.

Several of them, actually.

The Brunswick Square Village on Main Street in Shallotte is home to Flags and More owned and operated by Rita and David Moore. The store offers flag-lovers a variety from the American flag to garden flags and sports teams and more.

The store opened in August 2011as a way for the Moores to earn extra income after David became ill.

Sunset Beach is the scene this summer of a free community concert series.

Concerts are 6:30-8:30 p.m. Wednesdays in the Village Park at Seaside Village.

The park is on the mainland across the street from Fibber McGees Restaurant. Just look for the small gazebo, and bring a chair. There’s typically a dance floor for concert-goers who want to get up and join in.

Each week, a different local charity will be featured. Food and drinks are available for a donation, with funds going to the featured charity of the night.

SUNSET BEACH—For a second summer, the old Sunset Beach pontoon bridge is still an attraction, thanks to seasonal programs being offered by the Old Bridge Preservation Society.

From Memorial Day through Labor Day, the nonprofit group, formed to preserve and support the old bridge at its new resting site at 109 Shoreline Drive W., has scheduled a variety of programs.

Members invite visitors to “come right off the new bridge, pull in here and come to this beautiful oak tree-lined site.”

One year ago, a local man felt the pulling of God on his heartstrings.

Joseph Memory, an Ocean Isle Beach resident who works as sergeant with the highway patrol in Robeson County, has a passion to reach the youth of Brunswick County before it is too late and their lives are plagued by trouble.

“A year ago I talked to a 19-year-old I had watched grow up,” Memory said. “He told me he likes to smoke pot. God really dealt with me after that.”

Too Much Sylvia takes the stage this Friday to headline the summer concert series at Ocean Isle Beach.

From 6:30-8 p.m. this Friday, June 1, Too Much Sylvia will perform in the parking lot of the Museum of Coastal Carolina on Ocean Isle Beach.

The family friendly concert series if free, and the public is welcome.

Over at Holden Beach, Gold Rush will take the stage at 6:30 p.m. Sunday, June 3, at the pavilion on the end of Jordan Boulevard.

CHARLESTON, S.C.—In 25 years of performing, Blue Dogs, a Charleston-based band, has released nine CDs and two DVDs.

Now, they’re coming to Ocean Isle Beach.

This Sunday, May 27, Blue Dogs is scheduled to perform at Sharky’s on Ocean Isle Beach.

At 9 p.m., they will take the stage at Sharky’s, just over the bridge on Ocean Isle Beach.

Blue Dogs are known for their Americana and country-rock sound.

There’s no cover to hear the tunes of Blue Dogs, who will play until midnight.

LITTLE RIVER, S.C.—Get ready for crabs, crafters and crooners.

The 31st Annual Blue Crab Festival is set for this weekend just south of the border in Little River, S.C.

Scheduled 9 a.m.-8 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, the festival traditionally showcases all-day entertainment and an array of food and arts-and-crafts booths lining the Little River waterfront the weekend after Mother’s Day.

Other events at the “biker-friendly festival” include a children’s area and activities.

Middle-school-aged students interested in art have several camps to choose from this summer.

Organized by the Brunswick Arts Council, the camps include one being offered at the Buddhist Temple on Midway Road in Bolivia, if enough students sign up.

Four summer art camps are planned June 20 through June 23,

The camps will enable students to work with local, professional artists to create an art project in three days that will be shown to parents and friends on the fourth day, a Saturday.

A fifth summer art camp will be offered June 28-July 1.
