  • Just a few more icky things to...

     I’m not exactly a germaphobe—or at least I wasn’t until last week.

    That’s when the “Today Show” came out with an appetizing breakfast-time report about our nasty vacuum cleaners.

  • I’ve never been a person...

    I just assumed my perception was altered from early on, as my own mother looks at least 10 years younger than she really is. I’ll look at people and try to compare them to her while guessing an age and am almost always a decade off.

    But I’ve come to find out I’m not the only one who lacks the skills needed to guess ages, and have had many people guess incorrectly when it comes to my own age.

  • Activities abound as the holidays...

    Ever seen a baby jellyfish or alligator? Now’s your chance.

    Bring your kids, grandkids, nephews and nieces to the N.C. Aquarium at Fort Fisher for “Aquababies Weekend” Nov. 22-23.

    All through the weekend, from 9 a.m.–5 p.m. each day, the aquarium will show off its most recently born animals: jellyfish, sea turtles, alligators, sea horses, fish, snakes and more.

    “This is a unique opportunity for the community to see babies that were either born here at the aquarium or came to us as babies,” said Hap Fatzinger, aquarium curator.

  • New law enforcement programs help...

    With a quick glance at the growing weekly public safety pages in The Brunswick Beacon, readers can easily see there’s a lot of crime going on in our community.

    From forgeries to vandalism and countless crimes in between, the break-ins, assaults and drug arrests here keep Brunswick County law enforcement officials busy.

    With a growing number of reported crimes, we’re glad to see the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office is taking a proactive approach to reducing crimes.

  • Congratulations BCC volleyball team

    When the Brunswick Community College volleyball team took to the court this season, players and officials had one thing on their minds—being competitive.

    It was a lofty goal considering it was the first time the college had fielded a volleyball team and one that met an unusual challenge—it didn’t even have its own gymnasium in which to practice. Instead, players used the gym at West Brunswick High School.

    But, in its first year, BCC Dolphins did more than just be competitive; the team proved it is one of the top schools in its division.

    intolerable that we have to alter it

    With her nose wrinkled and her upper lip curled into a slight sneer, she asked, “Is THAT what you are wearing out tonight?”

    It was an all too familiar scene. I have been married to my dear woman 45 years and know what I select to wear at important social events is subject to change—or else.

    Besides, it did not “go” with what she was wearing.

  • A dream fulfilled

    To the editor:

    Hearts fluttered with excitement, souls stirred with emotion as president-elect Barack Obama, born the son of a black father from Kenya and a white mother from Kansas, swept the presidency in a landslide victory.

    After decades of oppression and struggle—the nation watched as the mountain of injustice crumbled and the “dream” was finally realized. The dawn of a new day has come for all Americans every race, color and nationality.

    I feel proud America voted for Barack Obama.

  • To the editor:

    This letter is in response to John Heidtke’s column in the Oct. 30 edition of the Beacon entitled “A Few Good Cops…”

    The article addressed drug trafficking in the county and most specifically listed seven drug hot spots. Some of the article was very informative and hopefully the new K-9 unit will be a deterrent to the crime in the county.

  • Presidential election reminds us...

    President-elect Barack Obama made history with his presidential victory last week—a triumph to be celebrated by all Americans.

    Obama’s victory reminds each and every person our dream, the American Dream, is only alive and well, and is closer for all Americans than ever before. Hold on to that dream and cherish that dream as we go through these difficult times.

    I thought John McCain was the better man for the job, but as McCain said, the people have spoken. That’s what makes our country so great.

  • Sherrie Metts

    Sherrie Lee Metts, 53, of Bolivia, died Nov. 10.

    She was born Jan. 8, 1955, in Jacksonville, a daughter of Edward Earl Metts and Genora Batchelor Metts.

    She was preceded in death by her father, Edward Metts; her companion for 22 years, Jimmy Ward; her niece, Renay Ward and her brother, Edward Earl Metts Jr.

    Surviving are her mother, Genora Metts; her sisters, Judy Ward and husband Edward and Sondra Roark and husband Tommy; nephews, Johnny Ward, Christopher Ward and wife Kaye and Stephen Roark; niece, Jessica Johnson; great nephews and nieces; numerous friends.

  • Journey leads mom back to college...

    It was the day before graduation. The campus at UNC-Chapel Hill was a sea of white dresses, suits, ties and Carolina blue.

    I had been attending a North Carolina Press Association workshop and was walking to my car. Everywhere I looked there were excitement as young men and women tried on their gowns and talked to their families.

    The walk to my car was a long one as I thought about how I missed out on that experience.

    That day, I decided to go back to school—one more time.

  • Was shocked by teens’...

    To the editor: This is in reference to the article featured in the Oct. 15 issue of the Brunswick Beacon about Dee Hill’s “fumbled future.”

    While summarizing the events of that horrid night, the author, Kathryn Jacewicz, specifically refers to Beck’s Restaurant in Calabash as the meeting place for these teenagers.

    It is true one of those teenagers was employed by our restaurant and, like everyone else in the county who knew any one of these teens, we were shocked by his actions as we felt it was completely out of character.

  • Doesn’t support circuses

    To the editor: Please consider these facts:

    1) Circus animals are kept in cages that are too small to allow for movement or they are chained to keep them stationary. They are prisoners of profit and cruelty.

    2) Tigers are semi-nocturnal, solitary animals that love water. In circuses, they are forced to perform during the daytime; are caged next to each other; are forced to perform in groups; and do not have access to waterholes.

  • Who is Merrill?

    To the editor: My mind is already at work. Does anyone out there know the Libertarian candidate, Rachel Joiner Merrill?

    I just checked out the state board of elections’ Web site and this woman has not filed any reports since plunking down the $204 filing fee.

    She filled out no questionnaires I am aware of; she did not appear at any forums I attended (and I attended almost all of them), and she didn’t attend any meet-the-candidate gatherings.

    As my daughter said, she is as invisible as her campaign reports.

  • Do something a little different...

    Remember when you were actually excited about the Christmas season? When you didn’t dread long lines, materialistic shoppers and incessant commercials telling your kids and grandkids what to ask for?

    We’re about ready to start the Christmas shopping season, and if you’ve decided you’ve had enough with the commercialization and “gimme” mentality, Calabash Presbyterian Church has an idea that might get you excited about the season again.

  • Mourns Bellamy’s passing

    To the editor: With a heavy heart, I join in the mourning of the Rev. Norman Bellamy, along with the members and friends of the Bellamy family.

    According to my aged and weakened memory, Rev. Bellamy made history years before Sen. Barack Obama.

    He registered the first black man to ever cast a ballot in the Brunswick County political process.

    Rev. Bellamy and Perry James Gore were installing shingles on the roof of Cedar Grove Baptist Church when Gore lamented the fact his father was paying all sorts of taxes to Brunswick County and yet

  • We can help BFA

    To the editor: Not so long ago, we paid $4 for a gallon of gas. We managed. It can now be purchased for $2.25 a gallon.

    What if we all took that $1.75 at an average of 13 gallons, equaling $22.75 and used our coupons or visited a dollar store and purchased items for Brunswick Family Assistance? It can be done.

     

  • Disappointed in election coverage

    To the editor: I was shocked at the lack of coverage of the election of president-elect Barack Obama in your newspaper and most particularly on the front page. Newspapers all over this country and indeed the world heralded this historic event on their front pages with bold words and pictures.

    There was not one picture of president- elect Obama I could find in your newspaper in the edition immediately after the election.

  • Tired of bailouts

    To the editor: After watching the award-winning documentary, “Who Killed the Electric Car?” I have no sympathy at all for the car industry today.

    The EV1 was introduced in 1996 and leased to consumers in California who loved everything about the car. General Motors would not allow any purchase of these and later destroyed the majority of the EV1s by crushing them.

    They were discontinued after 1999 and subsequently removed from the roads in 2003 by GM (except for a few). The car’s discontinuation was and remains a controversy.

  • Little boy’s struggle...

    He sits in the floor, playing with a pile of toy trains. Mimicking their movement on whatever surface his little hands can reach, he giggles and laughs.

    In the distance, he hears the sound of a real train on a far-off track. He stops. His eyes light up as he moves his hand toward his mouth. Taking a deep breath in he blows out, echoing the sound of its distant whistle.

    A huge smile spreads across his face, and he laughs again.
