  • Agrees with editorial issues

    To the editor:

    I would like to voice agreement with the part of last week’s editorial that instructed citizens that “if you don’t like the way government does things, vote for change.”

    Being able to keep their homes? Vote for someone who didn’t profit in the collapse of Fannie Mae and vote against oversight.

    Uncertain about their jobs? Vote for someone who won’t raise the capital gains. Most economists agree this will surely bring about a depression.

  • Responds to letter

    To the editor:

    In response to “Disappointed in McIntyre,” the congressman is a Democrat, you know. There isn’t anything underhanded or unusual about him supporting other Democrats. To the best of my knowledge, the congressman is a good person, a good representative of the people of the 7th Congressional District of North Carolina and has never been in court for failing to pay child support.

    As for running for re-election, obviously the voters still want McIntyre to represent them, since he typically gets 70 percent of the vote.

  • Thoughts about turtles and more

    To the editor:

    Two new subjects just came into my life that never were there before. One is the turtle patrol, and the other is bush hogging.

    I just attended the annual Holden Beach Turtle Patrol meeting. One of its teams released 145 newborn terrapin turtles into the Atlantic of Holden Beach. This is considered to be a record for the area.

    The turtle patrol is truly to be commended. I am not sure who all of the members of the team were though. My wife Jill, a new trainee, was one of them. She was so proud to wear her red turtle patrol shirt.

  • Obama isn’t the answer

    To the editor:

    Barack Obama is a product of the Saul Alinsky radical socialism and redistribution of wealth. For Alinsky, the mantra was “change,” as outlined in his book “Reveille for Radicals.”

    For Obama, this is the same. He has avoided being exposed until “Joe the Plumber” came along and questioned him.

    For Alinsky and Obama, there is a careful calculation of tactics where the end always justifies the means. They ridicule opponents when the arguments of the opponent could not be refuted by logic, evidence or argument.

  • Tired of Dole and McCain

    To the editor:

    There are a few things that bother me. Gas prices now reflect the fact oil companies have been gouging us for years. When they can make $30 billion in three months, something is wrong.

    I do not understand how the same crooked politicians like Dole and McCain, as well as others like them, keep getting elected year after year.

    They are both for the oil companies so they can get more graft. They are for the rich and the general public. They only work for their own private interests. Get rid of the crooks and put people in who will work for us.

  • Candidates need blueprints for plan

    To the editor:

    In some elections, you have two candidates, and in others, you have multiple ones.

    Before moving south, I was a builder, land developer and Realtor. Every time someone had an idea to develop land, build a home or buy real estate, they needed a plan and eventually a blueprint.

    Elections are set up to confuse you, and they don’t have to be. Show anybody a blueprint of your plan you intend to build, and they will get the picture loud and clear even if they do not know how to build anything.

  • Likes Sarah Palin

    To the editor:

    Staff writer Laura Lewis wrote an article in last week’s Beacon titled: “Seems like everybody doesn’t like Sarah P.”

    I like Sarah Palin. Though I haven’t been given the opportunity to really get to know her, what I do know does not cause me to dislike her. Her popularity has plummeted not because of any public dislike but because of a real concern regarding what we do know as the election draws near.

  • Liberal politics is not the answer

    To the editor:

    It seems by all the polls Senator Obama will be our next president.

    There is a real anger and hatred toward President Bush by liberals and a real dissatisfaction among voters who are tired of eight years of his policies.

    This combination of hatred by liberals and change wanted by many voters is causing an unusual combination of people coming together to vote into office as president the most liberal senator in the Senate.

  • Disagrees with writers

    To the editor:

    I respectfully disagree with writers of several submissions in your last publication.

    When all else fails and all that remains is desperation, blame it on the liberal influence within the Democratic Party.

    In deference to the Republican Party, the Democratic Party has a healthy mix of liberal and conservative participants. That’s the best the Republican Party can concoct in a last ditch effort to maintain control and continue their government “of the wealthy, for the wealthy, by the wealthy.”

  • Get out and vote

    To the editor:

    To the citizens of Brunswick County: Please vote.

    In a few days, we will be given the right to vote for the people to run our school system for four more years. We need to take a long, hard look at what has taken place the last few years and look for something better in the coming years.

    So why is it Darwinists think if they utter the word “creation” in the classroom their pristine reality will collapse and they will suddenly be branded as anti-intellectual?

  • Supports Gilbert

    To the editor:

    As a parent of children in the Brunswick County school system and as a graduate of the same, I hope voters of Brunswick County will take a good look at the choices we have for the District 1 school board race.

    Ray Gilbert has been the candidate that has consistently done things to keep the public informed, has been strong in the face of adversity and has the students’ best interests in mind.

  • Supports McIntyre

    To the editor:

    I am a transplant here from Robeson County. Fortunately, I not only know Mike McIntyre for his outstanding job in Congress, I also know him personally along with his family and the integrity and honesty instilled in him as a child and a young man growing up.

    I know how he was raised in church and the values and morals he stands for today. You can’t bring up a conversation on politics without people commenting on the great job he has done for his district.

    The weather has finally turned and the chill of fall is at last in the air.

    Throughout Brunswick County, families have been busy transforming their homes and yards into frightful fun as they prepare for Halloween night. Store shelves are stocked with ghoulish decorations and an assortment of candy—everything from traditional popcorn balls, to chocolate bars and lots of eewy, gooey, gross things to delight taste buds.

  • An ounce of preventionee

    Shallotte Fire Chief Paul Dunwell always says one of the main goals of the department is to reduce the number of fires in the district by educating the public about fire safety and having the proper preventive measures in place.

    Dunwell, fire marshal Andrew Thompson, members of the Shallotte Fire Corps, the department’s volunteers, as well as the paid firefighters are always planning new ways to educate the public, especially through their “fire and life safety education” initiatives.

    “Sarah Palin is a bimbo.”

    Bubba Joe, my old high school buddy back in Tennesssee, blurted that out this past weekend when I rang him up to see who he was voting for.

    Me being a nosy reporter, I wanted to know just why Bubba Joe placed the Alaska governor and Republican vice-presidential contender in such a low intelligence-quotient bracket, as if the media hadn’t already done a bang-up job of that.

  • Disappointed in McIntyre

    To the editor:

    I am disappointed in Rep. Mike McIntyre, who has been the longtime incumbent in Congress, representing the 7th District of North Carolina.

    My husband and I have always crossed party lines to vote for McIntyre because of the conservative views we believed he held.

    It has come to our attention, and it is our understanding McIntyre has wholeheartedly endorsed Barack Obama.

    It seems he has also thrown his support to Nancy Pelosi, who has proven to be ultraliberal, by voting to put her in the powerful position of Speaker of the House.

  • How will Obama’s tax cut...

    To the editor:

    The media has never questioned how Obama can give 95 percent of Americans a tax cut when only 45 percent of people pay income taxes.

    He can only do this by giving taxpayer money to non-taxpayers—in other words—income redistribution. If people can’t see this as another step toward socialism they are ostriches with their heads in the sand.

  • Make sure your vote is an informed...

    I have never enjoyed politics, but as this year may be the most important presidential election in history, I have tried to change that.

    The next leader of the free world needs to have an action plan in place the minute he steps into office, because there’s some major work to be done.

    This will be the second presidential election I am old enough to vote in, and I fully intend to do so. But to make the most informed decision as possible, I have tried to research each candidate with a clear head and an open mind.

  • Where are the educators on school...

    To the editor:

    I am sure everyone living in Brunswick County realizes we have problems in our school system. I

    believe the majority of these problems can be laid to the poor leadership of our school board and of our

    superintendent.

    Parents, you may not be aware of this, but not one member of our school board is a

    professional educator. Is it any wonder little academic progress was made during the school year

    ending in 2007 and we had more than 400 students drop out? What does this say for our school board’s

    leadership?
