  • Seems like everybody doesn't...

    “Sarah Palin is a bimbo.”

    Bubba Joe, my old high school buddy back in Tennesssee, blurted that out this past weekend when I rang him up to see who he was voting for.

    Me being a nosy reporter, I wanted to know just why Bubba Joe placed the Alaska governor and Republican vice-presidential contender in such a low intelligence-quotient bracket, as if the media hadn’t already done a bang-up job of that.

  • Disappointed in McIntyre

    To the editor:

    I am disappointed in Rep. Mike McIntyre, who has been the longtime incumbent in Congress, representing the 7th District of North Carolina.

    My husband and I have always crossed party lines to vote for McIntyre because of the conservative views we believed he held.

    It has come to our attention, and it is our understanding McIntyre has wholeheartedly endorsed Barack Obama.

    It seems he has also thrown his support to Nancy Pelosi, who has proven to be ultraliberal, by voting to put her in the powerful position of Speaker of the House.

  • How will Obama’s tax cut...

    To the editor:

    The media has never questioned how Obama can give 95 percent of Americans a tax cut when only 45 percent of people pay income taxes.

    He can only do this by giving taxpayer money to non-taxpayers—in other words—income redistribution. If people can’t see this as another step toward socialism they are ostriches with their heads in the sand.

  • Make sure your vote is an informed...

    I have never enjoyed politics, but as this year may be the most important presidential election in history, I have tried to change that.

    The next leader of the free world needs to have an action plan in place the minute he steps into office, because there’s some major work to be done.

    This will be the second presidential election I am old enough to vote in, and I fully intend to do so. But to make the most informed decision as possible, I have tried to research each candidate with a clear head and an open mind.

  • Where are the educators on school...

    To the editor:

    I am sure everyone living in Brunswick County realizes we have problems in our school system. I

    believe the majority of these problems can be laid to the poor leadership of our school board and of our

    superintendent.

    Parents, you may not be aware of this, but not one member of our school board is a

    professional educator. Is it any wonder little academic progress was made during the school year

    ending in 2007 and we had more than 400 students drop out? What does this say for our school board’s

    leadership?

  • Unhappy with Republican mailings

    To the editor:

    Dear N.C. Republican Party leaders:

    In the past week, I have received two mass mailings from the North Carolina Republican Party. Both mailings contained scurrilous, biased and deliberately misleading personal attacks on the Democratic candidates for U.S. President and N.C. State Senate.

    The mailing about Barack Obama was four pages of malicious (and very old) information about William Ayers, intended to lead any reader to the conclusion Obama must be a terrorist or support terroristic activities.

    According to the U.S. Department of Justice, domestic violence includes intimate partner violence as well as violence between family members.

  • Universal healthcare is not the...

    To the editor:

    Even with the current economic meltdown, there seems to be no end to those lawmakers who want to dip into our pockets.

    Of major concern is Senator Obama’s universal healthcare proposal for all. Who’s going to pay for this?

    Guess who?

    This tragic proposition seems to be a major goal of the Democrats. In fact, as a congresswoman, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi advocated federal funding for every child in the country, and there are many others who have chimed in with their versions of free healthcare.

  • Republicans not to blame

    To the editor:

    It concerns me that recent letter writers have so forgotten history they believe president Bush and Republicans are responsible for the financial crisis.

    This mess began when President Carter decided low-income Americans had to own their own homes, but he should have stuck to Habitat for Humanity homes for them. Unfortunately, he convinced his Congress to enact the first Affirmative

    Action Housing Law urging lenders to give loans to people who could not qualify to pay them.

  • Why is pity deserved?

    I read the article about Mr. Hill with great interest. Aside from the fact those closest to him and those exploiting him for his athletic abilities chose not to recognize the warning signs of his downward spiral, one must wonder why this young man’s story evokes such pity.

  • Jones is a good candidate

    To the editor:

    Having almost 40 years experience in education, John Jones is an excellent candidate for the Brunswick County

    Board of Education.

    Having been a teacher, coach, principal and superintendent, Jones would be an asset for students and faculties. He is a Christian, husband, father and proud grandfather. He is a personable individual who is eager to serve the community.

    Jones is more than qualified and will be available to dedicate his expertise to all facets of quality education.

    To the editor:

    Fifty-two years ago on Oct. 23, 1956, a small crack appeared on the mighty Soviet Union’s brutal hold of the Eastern Nations. At a rally in Budapest, Hungarians marched to their magnificent revolution. This small nation (about 10 million) found the incredible bravery to challenge the Soviet Union.

  • Could Democrats be pro-life?

    To the editor:

    In light of recent revelations regarding the illicit national voter registration drive by ACORN, I believe Democrats should become the pro-life Party.

    Currently proud to be the abortion party, Democrats sow the seeds of self-destruction. They facilitate the infant murder of potential party members; thus, they now have to rig voter registration to maintain membership.

  • Hospital could become V.A. center

    To the editor:

    As we prepare for the new Brunswick Community Hospital, I have an idea. Can we get Congress, state and county officials to make the arrangements to convert the old Brunswick Community Hospital into a regional V.A. Center?

    We are seeing an increase in the number of veterans living in Brunswick County and this can be one way to honor and serve them, by reducing the drive to Charleston, S.C., or Fayetteville.

  • BFA in need of help

    To the editor:

    I am a long time volunteer for Brunswick Family Assistance. BFA and its volunteers have worked hard every Christmas for the past 27 years to bring Christmas spirit, joy and happiness to more than 1,000 children and seniors in Brunswick County.

    I have volunteered for the past seven years and am hoping to help again this year. I have learned BFA does not yet have a building to distribute the thousands of Christmas Wishes it has received this year and the event may have to be cancelled if one cannot be found soon.

    It is truly disheartening to watch our country descend from the proud individualism and moral strength that once characterized our society into the debased state of an increasingly socialized and passive society we see espoused by the acceptance of Obamaism.

    I served in the military for 30 years and observed firsthand in many parts of the world the destruction wrought by the insidious effects of socialism. Frederick Hayek carefully depicted these effects in his book, “The Road to Serfdom.”

    To the editor:

    A month or so ago, I wrote a letter regarding Mike McIntyre. I criticized him not so much for what he has done or not done in the name of the people of the 7th Congressional District of North Carolina, but for the length of time he has fed at the public trough, plus the fact he was a member of the Democratic Party.

    With the publishing of that letter, McIntyre called me at 9 p.m. on the day following and in a subdued voice excoriated my conclusions that if he did not believe in abortion-on-demand, gay rights or gun control, that anyone who is adamantly

  • Responds to creationism and schools...

    To the editor:

    I have never written a letter to the editor before but I felt compelled to respond to the Oct. 9 letter about creationism in school. I am a Christian also and while I see their point of view, I can only say, with all due respect and love, I don’t agree.

    The Bible says in Isaiah 55:10, 11: “For as the rain cometh down, and the snow from Heaven, and returneth not tither; but watereth the earth, and maketh it bring forth and bud, that it may give seed to the sower and bread to the eater.
