  • Country could sink from proposals

    To the editor:

    Your choice in November is simple. Obama/Biden want this country to continue as an assisted-living asylum. Go sit on the front porch and rock away your remaining years in peaceful bliss, leaving everything to them.

    The liberals already have the federal government managing your educational system, the environment, food consumption and car manufacturing, and now the financial and mortgaging industries. Next is your medical health. You are too stupid or demented to adequately care for yourselves.

  • Why let the Republican legacy...

    To the editor:

    With so much talk about the upcoming election, I couldn’t help but wonder why an election is necessary. Consider the following:

    Our government was established with three branches: executive, legislative and judicial. Basically, the executive is the presidency, the legislative the Senate and House of Representatives and the judicial is the Supreme Court.

    Republicans have controlled the presidency for 20 of the past 28 years.

  • We're headed in a bad direction

    To the editor:

    I have forgotten the exact date, but in mid-September Barbara Stanley (no relation) had a letter published in The Beacon concerning the Bush administration and the awful mess he has gotten our country into.

    I would like to congratulate Ms. Stanley. Her letter was informative. She knows what is going on in the world and the people behind all the trouble our world is in. I wish all Americans knew as much as she does.

    Our country is bankrupt, and the dollar, or should I say Federal Reserve Note, is headed toward being worthless.

  • Join anti-annexation group

    To the editor:

    In response to Joseph Pasulka of Southport—www.fairannexation.com (FAC) is the site you should join.

    At present, the site lists all North Carolina representatives who have or have not supported HR2367 bill for annexation moratorium.

    Sen. R.C. Soles (D) of District 8 refused to sign the request to Sen. Rand to send HR2367 annexation moratorium bill to the Senate floor. You can be mad at the mayor, and the both of us can be mad at Soles.

  • Effects on veterans far reaching

    To the editor:

    In a few short weeks, we’ll have a new leader for our country and perhaps a new hope for getting out of Iraq.

    For nearly six of the eight years George Bush has been president, we’ve been at war. Hard to believe, isn’t it? We’ve done such a good job of ignoring it.

  • New senior center opens

    Brunswick Senior Resources Inc. (BSRI), in collaboration with Faith Community Chapel on Sunset Harbor Road, Sunset Harbor, opened an additional center at the Chapel Fellowship Hall on Oct. 1.

    The program is named for Ellie Reilly who was recently killed in an automobile accident. For many years Ellie had advocated for the program. She knew of the impending opening before her death but did not live to see it.

    The center operates Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and, among other program features, will provide a nutritious meal.

    There’s a first time for everything, and a journalist’s job is no exception.

    For the most part, my Mondays are the same week after week. Last Monday turned out to be different, which was a welcome change.

    I drove to Wilmington in hopes of covering Sen. John McCain’s local arrival and subsequent rally downtown. I made it to the airport in time to have my cameras and equipment swept, which was about an hour and a half before he did.

    America and the global society are faced with a volatile market. There is no consciousness of the long term or the short-term effects of the economic crisis.

    Those who have a negative view of the economy believe the present crisis has the potential of being more devastating than the 1929 Great Depression because we now have an international economic system where all major economies can rise or fall based what happens in a country in which they may have little or no major influence.

    Elizabeth Dole has been in Washington for more than 40 years. She has collected millions of your hard earned tax dollars.

    When are you going to say to Elizabeth Dole you have had enough?

  • Fall means its festival time in...

    The air is a little cooler and the leaves are starting to fall. In Brunswick County, that means it time to celebrate the season with fall festivals.

    The next two weeks will be busy with the North Carolina Oyster Festival at Ocean Isle Beach and the Festival by the Sea at Holden Beach.

    People will flock like seagulls to the beaches to be part of the festivities. Both festivals will feature live music, food and craft vendors.

  • Concerned about traffic congestion

    To the editor:

    I read the article in the Brunswick Beacon about the redesigning of the causeway (on Holden Beach). I was particularly interested in the start of the causeway between Wings and Exxon and Walgreen’s being built on the opposite corner.

    I am a property owner in the Holiday Haven development and am concerned about the congestion at that area. My proposal would be to put in a traffic circle, which would keep the traffic flowing at all times.

  • Dune loss sad

    To the editor:

    I walked along Sunset Beach and Bird Island this morning and was amazed at the loss of sand dunes after our recent storms.

    Particularly distressing is the Kindred Spirit mailbox on Bird Island. The mailbox and bench are now inaccessible atop a large dune with no way to get to the location without a sheer climb up the 7-foot dune.

    I hope someone will relocate this wonderful Brunswick County beach tradition, enjoyed by residents and tourists alike, to a more accessible location on the beach.

  • Bush isn't to blame

    To the editor:

    For weeks, we have heard the Democrat theme about failed Bush policies causing the financial crisis.

    The truth is Obama and the Democrats are lying to the American people about the causes. This is all about home loans to people who could not afford them, with no financial review and nothing down, and Democrats pushing banks to do more. It started in the Carter years with the Community Reinvestment Act and helped along by ACORN’s attorney Obama winning a lawsuit against a bank because they were not making enough of these loans.

  • Supports Judah

    To the editor:

    I am writing this letter in support of Christy Judah, a candidate for the Brunswick County School Board.

    I have known Christy for almost six years and know her to be an honest, hard–working, caring and extremely intelligent person.

    Christy spent 30 years in the North Carolina education system, the last l8 years in Brunswick County, and has a master’s degree in education and counseling.

  • No annexation

    To the editor:

    I would like to drive a flatbed truck to the Southport mayor’s house, load it up and move it to Navassa. I am quite sure the mayor would object: “If I wanted to live in Navassa, I would have moved to Navassa!”

    That is probably the same response she would hear from victims of her annexation scheme: “If I wanted to live in Southport, I would have moved to Southport!”

    The mayor and her cronies apparently peer at the map saying, “Those folks must have a lot of money. Let’s get it!”

    To the editor:

    Some years ago our school board interviewed hundreds of superintendent applicants from all over the country and then carefully selected their pick of the litter.

    During this person’s short tenure, many in the community felt the board selected well. The school system seemed to be working and The Beacon and other media sources had to search out controversy and negativity elsewhere.

  • Liked 'Sunset'

    To the editor:

    We just wanted everyone associated with Sunset at Sunset to know how much their hard work is appreciated.

    Many volunteers worked on the success of this event for many months. Sponsors contributed their time, made donations and contributed to other areas of which we aren’t even aware.

    We feel a special thank you is due to the person responsible for having the United States Marine Corps Band perform. What a special treat for our little town of Sunset Beach.

  • Due care needed with high-tech...

    Last month, a motorist had to abandon ship seconds before his vehicle got stuck and clobbered by an oncoming train on the Metro-North Railroad tracks in Bedford Hills, N.Y.

    Jose Silva drove himself into such peril on purpose. The reason?

    His global positioning system told him to go that way.

    Oh, that’s a good one. Try that one the next time you’re involved in a vehicular mishap, especially if it’s your fault: “My GPS made me do it, Mr. Officer. Sir.”

    Humans behave like wild animals in that we are territorial and have established game trails.

    Predatory creatures use the game trails of others to set up their next meal.

    If we left footprints where we walk every day, it would become apparent that we are creatures of habit and rarely break away from our established routines.

    Regular sleeping schedules are needed in order to maintain our mental and physical health.

  • Former sheriff finally takes...

    After years of doing things the wrong way, former Brunswick County Sheriff Ronald Hewett took a step in the right direction Monday afternoon.

    Standing before peers, friends, family, attorneys—and some naysayers—Hewett publicly addressed the charge he had criminally obstructed justice in a federal investigation into his tenure as Brunswick County Sheriff.

    Before U.S. District Judge Earl Britt, Hewett said he takes “full responsibility” for his actions.
