  • BCC's inaugural baseball season comes to a close

    STAFF REPORT

    Brunswick Community College’s inaugural season of intercollegiate baseball came to an end last weekend as the Dolphins lost yet another one-run game, to Southeastern, and then fell to conference champion Lenoir Community College in the Region 10 Tournament at Mount Olive College.

    SOUTHEASTERN CC 12

    BRUNSWICK CC 11

    Brunswick Community College had the tying run in scoring position in the ninth inning but was unable to bring the runner home. Southeastern slipped past BCC 12-11.

  • Lenoir sweeps Dolphins

    Lenoir Community College, ranked No. 1 in the nation among community colleges and sporting a 46-7 record, defeated Brunswick Community College in three games last weekend.

    Lenoir won 13-1 in the first game of a doubleheader Friday.

  • Dolphins smoke Southeastern

    SHALLOTTE—Brunswick Community College scored in every conceivable way—from a squeeze play to an out-of-the-park home run—on its way to a 10-0 rout of Southeastern Community College last Wednesday night.

    The Dolphins made the last home game of their inaugural season a memorable one.

    “We fired up a little bit tonight,” BCC coach Robbie Allen said.

    Charlie Gore was the torch, as the Dolphins’ leadoff batter finished just a triple shy of hitting the cycle.

  • BCC bats light up scoreboard in 14-0 triumph

    Brunswick Community College’s second inning was as explosive as a fireworks show, as the Dolphins whipped Stanly Community College 14-0 Sunday afternoon.

    “We just got hits at the right time,” BCC coach Robbie Allen said. “It feels good because we haven’t been able to score bunches this year. We haven’t been able to string together hits. Now that we kind of know how that feels, maybe we’ll be able to do that more often.

  • Jordan Davis drills winning run in bottom of ninth

    Trailing by one run going into the bottom of the ninth inning, Brunswick Community College came from behind to edge Southeastern Community College 7-6 last Wednesday night.

    Jordan Davis drove in the winning run.

    The first two Dolphin batters in the bottom of the ninth, David Smeltzer and Jeremy King, each got hit by a pitch. Then T.J. Overman smacked a base hit up the middle, driving in Smeltzer to tie the game at 6-6, and Overman went to second on the throw to home. Southeastern intentionally walked Frankie Everitte to load the bases with no outs.

  • Gamble pays off for BCC in last-inning win over Hudson Valley

    SHALLOTTE—Brunswick Community College used a daredevil play to beat Hudson Valley in the second game of a doubleheader Monday night.

    The Dolphins fell 1-0 in the first game.

    The bats for both teams started working in the nightcap, and the score was tied 3-3 heading into the Dolphins’ half of the seventh.

    Jeremy King reached on a throwing error and got to second on a wild pitch. Then with two outs, Denver Nixon drilled a base hit up the middle that couldn’t score King because it was hit too hard.

  • BCC Dolphins come up short

    SHALLOTTE—There are two ways to look at Brunswick Community College’s baseball doubleheader last Thursday against the visiting Louisburg Hurricanes.

    A glass-half-full person might marvel at the fact a first-year club went toe-to-toe with a program that has won 25 conference titles and made 10 trips in the National Junior College Athletic Association World Series.

    A glass-half-empty person might look at the two narrow defeats and think what might have been. BCC had chances to win both games but came up short, 3-1 and 5-3.

  • BCC baseball piling up wins

    SHALLOTTE—The biggest challenge for Brunswick Community College’s baseball team in its inaugural season has little to do with pitching, hitting or fielding. It’s mental preparation.

    With a roster comprised of 17 freshmen and one sophomore, coach Robbie Allen said it’s been a struggle to keep the team fired up and focused for every inning of every game.

  • Dolphins beat Spartanburg in junior college semifinals

    WILMINGTON—Brunswick Community College used its depth to set a quick tempo and advance to the championship game of the Carolinas Junior College Conference Men’s Basketball Tournament.

    The Dolphins sent 12 players in and out of the lineup on Saturday and wore down Spartanburg Methodist in their 81-65 semifinal victory at Cape Fear Community College’s Schwartz Center.

    “It just came down to our depth and running the ball,” said BCC coach Walter Shaw.

  • BCC cruises past Clinton

    WILMINGTON—The simple pre-game “How are you doing coach?” was met with “I’ll let you know in a few hours.”

    It was Friday, the quarterfinal round of the Carolinas Junior College Conference Men’s Basketball Tournament at Cape Fear Community College’s Schwartz Center and you could sense the urgency engulfing Brunswick Community College coach Walter Shaw.

    And after dispatching Clinton (S.C.) Junior College 86-69 to advance to a semifinal match-up with Spartanburg Methodist College, Shaw’s demeanor didn’t changed.
