  • BCC beats Lenoir in three games

    The Brunswick Community College volleyball team completed a season sweep of Lenoir Community College by beating the Lancers 25-21, 25-23, 25-14 Saturday afternoon at the Dinah E. Gore Fitness & Aquatics Center.

    The first game was close throughout. BCC (4-6) took the lead for good at 21-20 on a kill by Hannah Sofield. BCC gained another point on a hit by Kenzie McDuffie. McDuffie and Rheanna Lawson worked a give-and-go for another point and a 23-20 lead. LCC gained two points before a sideout, and KaAnn Murray held serve for game point.

  • BCC volleyball clinics Oct. 2, Oct. 23.

     The BCC volleyball program will be hosting a volleyball clinic for those in the second through eighth grades. The clinic will begin at 9 a.m. Oct. 2 at the Dinah E. Gore Fitness & Aquatics Center.

    Participants should be prepared to run, jump, shuffle and perform skills with a volleyball. Youth should wear gym clothes, socks and tennis shoes to the clinics.

  • BCC beats Sandhills in volleyball

     The Brunswick Community College volleyball team defeated Sandhills Community College (Pinehurst) 3-1 Sept. 15 in a match at the Dinah E. Gore Fitness & Aquatics Center.

    BCC won the NJCAA Division II Region 10 match 25-21, 18-25, 25-16, 25-21.

  • BCC athletics department blood drive exceeds expectations

    The Brunswick Community College department of athletics sponsored the American Red Cross Blood Drive Aug. 26 at the Dinah E. Gore Fitness & Aquatics Center.

    “BCC athletics has several goals this year, and one is to increase community support in Brunswick County,” said Ashlyn Burke, the assistant athletics director and head women’s basketball coach.

    As athletes arrived on campus the first week of school, their first project was to sponsor the American Red Cross Blood Drive on their home court, Burke said.

  • BCC loses volleyball opener to defending tourney champion

     The Brunswick Community College volleyball team lost its opening match of the season to defending NJCAA Division II Region 10 champion Catawba Valley Community College on Saturday.

    CVCC, whose middle hitter, Francesca Edgerton, was the 2009 Division II Region 10 Player of the Year, beat the Dolphins 25-12, 21-25, 25-13, 25-21 at the Dinah E. Gore Fitness & Aquatics Center.

    BCC fell behind 10-1 in the first game, and for most the match it was playing from behind.

  • Holmes selected to All-America team

    Brock Holmes is the first Brunswick Community College baseball player to be selected to the National Junior College Athletic Association Division II All-America team.

    Holmes, in his freshman year, made third-team All-America in Division II. BCC coach Robbie Allen said Holmes deserved the recognition.

    “We were concerned about him, where his role was going to be in our rotation,” Allen said. “We were concerned as to whether or not he was even going to be in the rotation or be eligible to play for us.

  • First BCC girls’ basketball camp instructs and entertains

     After each guest spoke and demonstrated drills at the first Brunswick Community College girls’ basketball camp, BCC women’s head basketball coach Ashlyn Burke asked the campers three things they learned. If they were unable to answer, they had to run from one end of the court to another before she again would ask the question. It was a way of combining exercise and reinforcing lessons, common at sports camps.

  • BCC’s Tyree Graham signs with Rutgers

     Head men’s basketball coach Mike Rice announced June 3 that rising junior guard Tyree Graham, of Durham, has signed a scholarship agreement to attend Rutgers University and compete for the Scarlet Knights.

    A First Team All-Region 10 selection at Brunswick Community College this past season and a former North Carolina High School First Team All-State choice, Graham played his freshman season (2008-09) in the Big 12 Conference at Texas Tech University.

  • BCC baseball season ends in regional

     The Brunswick Community College baseball season ended Sunday after a 7-4 loss to Southeastern Community College in an NJCAA Division II regional in Martinsville, Va. The tourney is a qualifier to the NJCAA World Series.

    BCC, seeded No. 2, opened the tourney Friday by routing College of Albemarle 14-0 in five innings. Brock Holmes was the winning pitcher, giving up two hits. He walked one and struck out three.
