  • Lady Dolphins unable to overtake Louisburg

     SUPPLY—The Brunswick Community College women’s basketball team lost 68-58 to Louisburg Community College on Jan. 7 at the Dinah E. Gore Fitness & Aquatics Center.

    For BCC (4-7), Shaquita Jones scored 11 points, Danielle Blunt and Chelsea McGowan 10, Julia Crews 9 and Kiandra Long 8. Tequila Jones scored 5 points, Sheena Suttlemyre 2 and Emily Schweer 1.

    Louisburg led 44-35 in the second half but BCC outscored LCC in cutting the lead to 48-47.

  • BCC baseball field could be ready in May

     The Brunswick Community College baseball team is scheduled to play its 2011 home opener at noon Feb. 12 against Hartford Community College at West Brunswick High School.

    It most likely will be last time the Dolphins open their season at West.

    Working is progressing on the field and stadium at BCC, said Robbie Allen, the head baseball coach and athletics director at BCC.

  • Lady Dolphins finish 1-1 in home tourney

     The host Brunswick Community College women’s basketball team put on a defensive and offensive show Dec. 29 and easily handled Baltimore Community College 77-29 in the Southport Hampton Inn Holiday Classic.

    Although the Lady Dolphins had only one day of practice since the Christmas break, they led 34-13 at halftime in the game on Walter Shaw Court at the Dinah E. Gore Fitness & Aquatics Center.

     The Brunswick Community College men’s basketball team beat Central Carolina Community College in a first-round game of the Whiteville Urgent Care tournament.   • West Brunswick boys get first victory of season

     The West Brunswick High School boys’ basketball team beat East Bladen 72-57 Friday, West’s first victory of the season.

    Quan Bates scored 19 points, Taylor Buffkin 17, Geoff Gore 13 and Roman Smyth 11—all season highs—as new coach coach Eric Davis got his first victory with the Trojan program.

    Markel Jones scored a season-high 8 points, Jamal Jacobs 3 and Marquis Johnson 2 for West (1-2 in the conference 1-8).

  • Atkinson’s assists lead BCC to victory over Lenoir

      After splitting two games against top-10 teams at the Panhandle Shootout in Marianna, Fla., the Brunswick Community College men’s basketball team returned home to face Lenoir Community College Dec. 8. Sophomore guard Devon Atkinson scored 13 points and had 12 assists as BCC rallied to beat LCC 94-84 and improved to 6-5.

  • BCC men upset No. 3 Northwest Florida 73-72

     The Brunswick Community College men’s basketball team defeated previously unbeaten No. 3 Northwest Florida State College 73-72 Dec. 3 in the Panhandle Classic in Marianna, Fla.

    “It is the highest rated team we have ever beaten,” BCC coach Walter Shaw said. “And it is probably the biggest win in the history of the school outside of winning the region tournament championship (last season) and going to (the national tournament) in Hutchinson.

    “We made a name for ourselves.”

  • Sometimes father knows best

     The BCC women’s basketball team may attract as much attention this year not only for who is shooting jump shots but also for who is sitting courtside with the team.

    Joining head coach Ashlyn Burke an assistant Taylor Goodrich as a volunteer assistant is Burke’s Hall of Fame dad, Bob.

    The Brunswick Community College men’s basketball team came into Saturday’s game looking for another win on the young season, but Wake Technical Community College had other plans.

  • BCC women rout Caldwell

     SUPPLY—Alexis Jones scored 22 points and Shaquitta Jones 15 as the Brunswick Community College women’s basketball team beat Caldwell Community College 75-49 Saturday on Walter Shaw Court at the Dinah E Gore Aquatic & Fitness Center.

    Danielle Blunt scored 12 points as the Dolphins improved to 2-0.

    BCC trailed 8-7 with 11 minutes, 17 secods left in the first half but back-to-back layups by Blunt put the Dolphins ahead 19-12 with 6:47 left.
