  • Dolphins beat Spartanburg in junior college semifinals

    WILMINGTON—Brunswick Community College used its depth to set a quick tempo and advance to the championship game of the Carolinas Junior College Conference Men’s Basketball Tournament.

    The Dolphins sent 12 players in and out of the lineup on Saturday and wore down Spartanburg Methodist in their 81-65 semifinal victory at Cape Fear Community College’s Schwartz Center.

    “It just came down to our depth and running the ball,” said BCC coach Walter Shaw.

  • BCC cruises past Clinton

    WILMINGTON—The simple pre-game “How are you doing coach?” was met with “I’ll let you know in a few hours.”

    It was Friday, the quarterfinal round of the Carolinas Junior College Conference Men’s Basketball Tournament at Cape Fear Community College’s Schwartz Center and you could sense the urgency engulfing Brunswick Community College coach Walter Shaw.

    And after dispatching Clinton (S.C.) Junior College 86-69 to advance to a semifinal match-up with Spartanburg Methodist College, Shaw’s demeanor didn’t changed.

  • BCC women lose play-in game

    Brunswick Community College was eliminated in the play-in game of the Carolinas Junior College Conference Women’s Basketball Tournament last week in Wilmington.

    Denmark (S.C.) Technical College defeated the Lady Dolphins 62-57 Thursday at Ashley High School. BCC ended the season on a 12-game losing streak and finished 2-20 overall.

    Jasmine Monroe scored 18 points, Robin Smith had 12, Temere Williams had 11, Chrissy Campbell had 10 and Tiara Brodie had nine for the Lady Dolphins.

  • BCC enters tournament with confidence

    Confidence should not be an issue as Brunswick Community College heads into this week’s Carolinas Junior College Conference Men’s Basketball Tournament in Wilmington.

    On Monday, the Dolphins wrapped up their best regular season ever with a 121-80 trouncing of Roanoke-Chowan Community College.

    Jeremy Basnight tied a school record with eight three-pointers and finished with 26 points Travis Foster had five three-pointers and 19 points. Eight Dolphins scored in double figures.

  • BCC regroups in win over Guilford

    SHALLOTTE—After losing two of its previous three games and threatening to undo a season of good works, the Brunswick Community College men’s basketball team restored some order.

    The Dolphins put together a 31-6 run in the second half and rolled to a 101-74 victory in Sunday’s home finale against Guilford Technical Community College.

    BCC led by five at halftime and pulled away shortly after the break by scoring 16 unanswered points. The Dolphins followed that up with an 11-0 spurt that extended their lead to 30 points.

  • Lady Dolphins drop season finale

    The Brunswick Community College women’s basketball team has had a hard time finishing strong all season, and the trend continued right through last week’s regular-season finale.

    A 10-point halftime lead evaporated in the second half of a 73-68 loss to visiting Lenoir Community College.

    “They just don’t have the heart to win,” said BCC coach Kenneth White. “We were up 10 at halftime and gave it to them. It all comes down to heart.”

  • Volleyball program adds South setter

    Brunswick Community College continued stockpiling players for its inaugural season of volleyball with the signing of South Brunswick High School senior Meghan Goldstein on Monday.

    A 5-foot-3 setter, Goldstein was a four-time all-conference, three-time all-county and two-time all-region selection. She was named Brunswick County player of the year in 2006.

    Goldstein said she had planned to attend either BCC or Cape Fear Community College in Wilmington for two years before transferring to a four-year school.

  • Walk-off win caps weekend series

    SHALLOTTE—Brunswick Community College’s baseball team won three out of four games during the first home series of its inaugural season, capping it with a dramatic comeback victory.

    An RBI single by Derek Cozzolino with two outs in the seventh inning completed a four-run rally and gave the Dolphins a 6-5 win in Sunday’s series finale against Danville (Va.) Community College.

    Cozzolino, a freshman from Jacksonville, was mobbed by teammates following the game-winning hit. He said it was important to win the final game of the four-game series.

  • Louisburg stops BCC win streak

    SHALLOTTE—It was an alarming Saturday for the Brunswick Community College men’s basketball team.

    Louisburg came into the West Brunswick High School gymnasium and did something no other team has done this season—beat the Dolphins on their home court.

    Anton Silver made two free throws with nine-tenths of a second remaining to give the Hurricanes an 85-83 win in a game that featured questionable officiating and a 25-minute delay because of a fire alarm.

  • Denmark defeats short-handed Dolphins

    SHALLOTTE—It looks like the Brunswick Community College women’s basketball team will achieve its goal of making it through the entire season, but only by a whisker.

    After canceling two recent non-conference road games due to a lack of healthy players, the Lady Dolphins only had five in uniform for Sunday’s contest against Denmark (S.C.) Technical College.

    BCC gave Denmark Tech all it could handle—despite finishing the game with four players on the court—before falling 70-61. It was the 10th loss in a row for the Lady Dolphins.
