  • Sloup remains unbeaten in conference
    Staff Report Ashley Sloup won her fifth conference golf tournament of the season Oct. 1 at Brierwood in leading South Brunswick to the team title. Sloup, a junior, shot a 6-over-par 42. No one else shot in the 40s. Sloup played the last three holes 3-4-2. The golfers played from the gold tees on a 2,821-yard layout, about 400 yards longer than the first time they played there.

    Adult Halloween tennis tournament The adult Halloween tennis tournament, organized by Brunswick Parks and Recreation, is 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Oct. 27 at Ocean Isle Beach Park (rain date is Oct. 28). This is for intermediate and advanced tennis players ages 18 and older. Singles fee is $15. Century doubles fee is $25. Same gender and mixed doubles fee is $25. Costumes encouraged.   • Shock remains unbeaten for the year
    The Brush Dental Shock 13U girls’ soccer team won a tough match 1-0 to remain unbeaten for the year. The Shock again played up two full-age divisions against 15- and 16-year-old girls. Despite being greatly undersized, the Shock was able to shut out its third opponent out of four it has faced this year. “The Shock prides itself on being the most fit team on the field and use constant pressure on the ball to wear teams down,” coach Mark Giordano said.

    Race Oct. 13 benefits Parkinson’s research The Mary Lu Blasdell Memorial 5K Run/Walk is 8:30 a.m. Oct. 13 at the pavilion off Jordan Boulevard underneath the Holden Beach Bridge.   • Shock starts season with 5-0 win
    The Brush Dental Shock U13 girls’ soccer team started its new season with a 5-0 win in the Pleasure Island Soccer Association. “The Shock have new challenges this year, playing on a full-sized field 11-against-11 for the first time,” coach Mark Giordano said. “The team did a great job of keeping their spacing and passing to open players creating scoring opportunities.” Mia Adcock led the Shock with two scores, and Ashley Oakes, Caroline Hawthorne and Kira Frawley each scored one.
  • Carly White: Conference Carolinas Player of Week
    Mount Olive’s Carly White has been selected as the NCAA Division II Conference Carolinas Women’s Volleyball Player of the Week during week No. two of the 2012 season. The junior middle blocker, who is a West Brunswick High School graduate, recorded 17 kills in Mount Olive’s three-set win over Peach Belt Conference member UNC Pembroke and reached double figures in kills in all four matches at the MOC Invitational as the Trojans posted a 3-1 record and finished as tournament runner-up, coming within two points of winning the title.

    In the spirit of teamwork taught by youth sports, Ocean City Chevrolet is teaming up with Brunswick United Soccer Club to provide their players and coaches soccer kits filled with equipment bags, pop-up nets, sport cones, scrimmage vests, T-shirts, a sponsorship check for $500 and an opportunity to help raise funds.

    Brunswick Closer to Home tourney Sept. 26 On Sept. 26, the Brunswick Plantation Ladies Golf Association is hosting a golf tournament to benefit Lower Cape Fear Hospice, in particular, the new SECU Hospice House of Brunswick in Supply. The day will begin with breakfast and registration at 7:30 a.m. followed by a shotgun start at 9 a.m. Format is captain’s choice.
