    McCumbee, Saini 31st in sports car race Chad McCumbee and Jason Saini finished 31st out of 34 entries in the GRAND-AM Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge action at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca on Saturday in Monterey, Calif. They completed 54 of 71 laps in their C.J. Wilson Racing Mazda MX-5.
  • West loses conference opener in tennis
    Staff Report West Bladen’s Lady Knights beat West Brunswick 7-2 Sept. 6 in conference match. The Trojans’ only victories were by Penny Watts at No. 1 singles and Anna James at No. 4 singles. West Bladen is 2-2 in the conference, 5-2 overall. West Brunswick is 0-2 in the conference.
  • Sunset Beach fun run is set for Oct. 6
    For the third year, the annual Sunset at Sunset Community Block Party will begin with its 5K run/fitness walk for adults and children on Oct. 6 at Sunset Beach Island. The fun race is appropriate for all types and levels of walkers and runners alike.

    Brunswick County Youth Basketball League sign-ups Registration is open for the Brunswick County Parks and Recreation Youth Basketball League, open to boys and girls in first through sixth grades. Mandatory skills analysis is Nov. 16. Games will be played at Shallotte Middle School, South Brunswick Middle School, Leland Middle and Cedar Grove Middle School. Deadline to register is Nov. 19.   • Champions Night Sept. 21 at West
    West Brunswick High School will honor its 1991, 1992 and 1993 championship football teams on Sept. 21 on Champions Night at M.H. Rourk Stadium. The Trojans won the Class 2A East Regional in 1991 and finished second in state. The 1992 and 1993 teams won state championships. Former players who plan to attend should contact Greg Mott 538-6292 or West athletics director John Floyd at 398-2740. The Trojans will play North Brunswick that night. The game begins at 7:30 p.m.

    Chad McCumbee  update Chad McCumbee finished 25th in Jeff Foxworthy’s Grit Chips 200 Friday at Atlanta Motor Speedway. McCumbee started 26th and finished 127 of the 130 laps. He earned $7,605. Ty Dillon won the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race, which had 36 drivers in it. He earned $45,885. Taking advantage of Kyle Busch’s brush with the wall in the late going, pole-sitter Dillon won going away. It was the first victory for the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series rookie.
  • Laney dominates Cougars 42-7 in rematch

    Knights of Columbus Soccer Challenge The Knights of Columbus Soccer Challenge is 5 p.m. Aug. 29 at St. Brendan the Navigator Roman Catholic Church, 5101 Ocean Highway West in Shallotte. The Knights of Columbus Our Lady of the Rosary Council 9039 in Shallotte will be conducting a soccer challenge for all boys and girls ages 10-14. Participation forms will be available at the event and must be signed by a parent or guardian. Contestants please bring a copy of your birth certificate.
