  • Champions Night Sept. 21 at West
    West Brunswick High School will honor its 1991, 1992 and 1993 championship football teams on Sept. 21 on Champions Night at M.H. Rourk Stadium. The Trojans won the Class 2A East Regional in 1991 and finished second in state. The 1992 and 1993 teams won state championships. Former players who plan to attend should contact Greg Mott 538-6292 or West athletics director John Floyd at 398-2740. The Trojans will play North Brunswick that night. The game begins at 7:30 p.m.

    Chad McCumbee  update Chad McCumbee finished 25th in Jeff Foxworthy’s Grit Chips 200 Friday at Atlanta Motor Speedway. McCumbee started 26th and finished 127 of the 130 laps. He earned $7,605. Ty Dillon won the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race, which had 36 drivers in it. He earned $45,885. Taking advantage of Kyle Busch’s brush with the wall in the late going, pole-sitter Dillon won going away. It was the first victory for the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series rookie.
  • Laney dominates Cougars 42-7 in rematch
    By Shannon Leslie Beacon Correspondent BOILING SPRING LAKES—In a rematch from the BB&T Football Jamboree, the South Brunswick Cougars played host to a Laney Buccaneers’ team, led by Tariq Lane, who had shut out South 13-0 in the scrimmage in August.

    Knights of Columbus Soccer Challenge The Knights of Columbus Soccer Challenge is 5 p.m. Aug. 29 at St. Brendan the Navigator Roman Catholic Church, 5101 Ocean Highway West in Shallotte. The Knights of Columbus Our Lady of the Rosary Council 9039 in Shallotte will be conducting a soccer challenge for all boys and girls ages 10-14. Participation forms will be available at the event and must be signed by a parent or guardian. Contestants please bring a copy of your birth certificate.
  • Mountain bike tour Saturday
    Apparel brand Dirtball has announced the inaugural “Pedal 2 The People Tour Fueled by Monster Energy,” a three-stop regional North Carolina mountain bike series that will award a $10,000 purse and championships in five divisions. The dates are Saturday, Brunswick Nature Park, Leland; Sept. 15, Harris Lake County Park, New Hill; Oct. 13, The Bicycle Post Trail, Greenville.
  • North Brunswick Scorpions beat Pender in opener
    By Jules Sacchetti Beacon Correspondent LELAND—The season-opening football game Friday night between the Pender Patriots and the host North Brunswick Scorpions game was penalty filled, but despite the penalties, the Scorpions came out on top, winning 21-16.
  • Cougars lose opener to West Craven
    Staff Report South Brunswick lost 27-13 at West Craven in a season-opening high school football game Friday in Vanceboro. South scored the first points. A long run by Cedric Daniels set up a touchdown by Damani Johnson. Gavin Dail kicked the extra point for a 7-0 lead. West Craven then went on to score four touchdowns in taking a 27-7 lead through the fourth quarter. West Craven scored its first touchdown on pass from Demetres Abrams to Torrey Jackson. The Cougars blocked the extra point.

    Fall Ball League sign-ups are Aug. 25 The Brunswick County Fall Ball League is signing up athletes ages 5-11. Sign-ups are 9 a.m.–1 p.m. Aug. 25 at Lockwood Folly Park or Waccamaw Park. There are three age groups: Coach pitch for ages 5-7, minors for ages 8-9 and majors for ages 10-11. Players must be 5-years-old before June 1 and can’t turn 12 before June 1.
