  • North loses in state sectional to Whiteville
    Staff Report Matt Lowry and reliever David Zacek held Whiteville to four hits, but North Brunswick lost 6-0 to the Wolfpack in a sectional game of the North Carolina High School state playoffs May 22 at Whiteville. Whiteville’s Hunter Smith gave up three hits and struck out 10 in the seven-inning game. Whiteville (22-5) advances to the regional. North, which lost in the regional last year, finishes the season 20-5.
  • Summer camps for kids and grandkids
    By Rebecca Albin Executive Director The First Tee of Brunswick County sponsors a variety of summer programs for kids of all ages and everybody’s invited to participate. Here’s the list: Summer golf camps. These are for kids and visiting grandkids and begin June 19 and run through Aug. 10.
  • Few changes in high school basketball rules
    Participation and fan interest in high school basketball remain strong throughout the nation, and the National Federation of State High School Associations Basketball Rules Committee voted to retain one aspect of the sport that makes it unique from other levels of play. At its recent meeting in Indianapolis, the committee considered a proposal to add a shot clock to the high school rules but agreed that the sport played by about one million boys and girls in about 18,000 high schools is functioning well without it.
  • Middle school track has final meet
    Staff report The Brunswick County middle schools had their fourth and final track-and-field meet May 10 at West Brunswick High School. South won the girls’ meet and Shallotte won the boys’ meet. Here are the first-place finishers, as reported by the coaches. Girls’ winners Katelyn Hatch of South won the long jump (14-6). Clarissa Somers of South won the shot put (28-4). Rexi Lee Harris of South won the high jump. Heaven-Leigh Banks of South won the discus (71-4).

    Staff Report The North Brunswick High School baseball team beat North Pitt 14-3 in five innings Friday in a third-round game of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association Class 2A state baseball playoffs.

  • Trojans lose 7-0 in soccer playoffs
    Staff Report The West Brunswick High School girls’ soccer team gave up a goal in the first 30 seconds and a goal in the last 90 seconds of the first half as it lost 7-0 May 8 to West Carteret in the first round of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association Class 3A state soccer playoffs. The Trojans finish the season 12-7-1. West Carteret is 11-7. Carteret led 3-0 at the half, scoring its second goal in the first four minutes.
