    Staff Report The North Brunswick High School baseball team beat North Pitt 14-3 in five innings Friday in a third-round game of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association Class 2A state baseball playoffs.

  • Trojans lose 7-0 in soccer playoffs
    Staff Report The West Brunswick High School girls’ soccer team gave up a goal in the first 30 seconds and a goal in the last 90 seconds of the first half as it lost 7-0 May 8 to West Carteret in the first round of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association Class 3A state soccer playoffs. The Trojans finish the season 12-7-1. West Carteret is 11-7. Carteret led 3-0 at the half, scoring its second goal in the first four minutes.

    Kayla Padgett update In the Conference USA track and field championships in New Orleans, ECU freshman Kayla Padgett finished fifth out of 18 competitors in the shot put with a mark of 14.30 meters (46 feet, 11 inches). All of the competitors were either freshmen or sophomores. The winning mark was 15.82 meters (51 feet, 11 inches). She was eighth in the discus with a throw of 44.45 meters (145.10).

    The North Brunswick softball team opened the North Carolina High School Athletic Association Class 2A state playoffs by beating Fairmont 23-1 in five innings Friday. North (10-11) scored 11 runs in the fourth inning and finished with 24 hits.

  • Inspirations dancers win 30 solo awards
    By Shiloh Ransom Special to The Beacon Inspirations Dance Centre (Southport) participated in Star Talent Productions dance competition in Supply. The dancers received High Platinum, Platinum and High Gold awards for 10 group dances, 30 solos and one trio. In the Petite/Junior group age division, they received first overall Junior Elite Small Group, first overall Junior Excel Small Group and third overall Petite Excel Small Group.
  • Cougar boys get first playoff win
    Staff Report For the first time ever, the South Brunswick High School boys’ tennis team has won in the state playoffs. South, coached by John Walls, beat Washington 6-3 on May 1 in the first round of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association Class 3A state tournament. South won four singles matches and two doubles matches. An important singles victory was by Noah Pieper at No. 5, as he won a tiebreaker 10-8. Edwin Burnett and Patrick Evans won a close match at No. 1 doubles, taking the victory 10-8.
  • Avallone, Chappell star on Lady Trojans’ Senior Night
    By Sarah Sue Ingram Beacon correspondent Two left-handed batters did all the right things to make Senior Night one to remember for West Brunswick’s softball team on May 3. The Trojans led South Brunswick by seven runs in the sixth inning when West’s seniors, Dez Avallone and Alyssa Chappell, came to bat with runners on base. Avallone ripped a fastball to right field to score one run, and then Chappell blasted a curveball to center field to drive in two more runs and end the game an inning early as West won 10-0.
