    Lighthouse run is set for April 20 The 15th annual Oak Island Lighthouse run and walk begins at 8 a.m. April 20 at the N.C. Baptist Assembly at Fort Caswell and there will be three distances for runners: a one-half marathon (13.1 miles) a 10K (6.2 miles) and a 5K (3.1 miles). Register at www.lighthouse10k.com or at the Southport-Oak Island Area Chamber of Commerce Welcome Center at 4433 Long Beach Road, Southport. Entry fee is $30 per person for the 5K or 10K and $45 for the one-half marathon.

    The Ocean Ridge LGA played its spring ringer tournament March 18 and March 20 on Lion’s Paw.   • Shock shuts out Southport
    The Brush Dental Shock shut out the Freedom Lawn Crossfire of Southport 5-0. The Shock had a balanced attack with four girls scoring. Kayla Crouch, Logan Shultz and Lauren Dimuzzio, each scored one and Ashley Oakes scored two. The Shock is 2-0-1 for the season and has given up one goal.
  • Lady Trojans split conference softball games
    Staff Report The West Brunswick High School softball team beat East Bladen 7-3 in a conference game Friday in Shallotte. Caroline Gore (3-0) was the winning pitcher, giving up two hits and three unearned runs. She walked no one and struck out 12 in the seven-inning game. For West, Bethany Morrison was 2-for-3 with three RBIs. Ashley Smith was 1-for-2 with a triple. Abbey Dyson was 1-for-3 with two RBIs. Bre Small had one RBI and walked twice.
  • White named Conference Carolinas’ pitcher of week in softball
    Staff Report Mount Olive College pitcher Carly White, who allowed one run in 14 innings in two conference victories last week, is the Conference Carolinas softball pitcher of the week. The award was White’s second this season and her third weekly conference award overall in 2012-13. She also earned Conference Carolinas women’s volleyball player of the week honors during the fall.
  • Silver Coast Lady Lightning volleyball team wins tourney
    On March 16, West Brunswick High School was host of its first Carolina Region club volleyball tournament. Ten teams in the bronze division (for 15-year-olds) from across eastern North Carolina participated. The Silver Coast Volleyball Club Lady Lightning, based out of Brunswick and Columbus counties, won the tournament.

    Staff Report The South Brunswick boys’ tennis team improved to 5-0 in the conference, 8-2 overall, by beating North Brunswick 9-0 March 21 in Leland. In singles, Gabe Azzato def.     Relay for Life tourney is set for April 20 Town Creek Elementary School is sponsoring a golf tourney April 20 at Magnolia Greens and the proceeds benefit Relay for Life. The shotgun start is 8 a.m. The fee is $60 per golfer, $240 per team, and covers lunch. To register, call Stella Tucker at (910) 253-6500 or email stucker@bcswan.net by April 1.
  • Tilley dominates; Trojans defeat East Bladen
    By Sam Hickman Beacon Correspondent In its two conference games before Friday night’s contest against East Bladen, the West Brunswick varsity baseball team had 30 hits and scored 35 runs combined. The Trojans were due for an off night offensively. The way Landon Tilley pitched against the visiting Eagles, West’s offensive woes simply didn’t matter much.
