  • Hilliard, Minor second in state indoor track and field meet
    Staff Report In a thrilling finish, South Brunswick junior Carmen Hilliard was second to West Carteret sophomore Blake Dodge by 0.03 seconds the 1,600-meter run Saturday in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association Class 1A/2A/3A indoor state track and field meet at the Eddie Smith Fieldhouse at UNC Chapel Hill. Hilliard finished in 5:09.57. Dodge won in 5:09.54. In the 1,000-meter run, Hilliard finished 10th in 3:14.12. The winning time was 3:08.46. Ashley Sloup was 20th in 3:22.94 in the 29-runner field.
  • Scholarship winner Jones honored at N.C. State game
    Lindsey Jones of Nakina Middle School was recognized for winning a Touchstone Energy Sports Camp scholarship during a halftime presentation at a Wolfpack Women’s basketball game. Jones reunited with 22 basketball camp scholarship winners Jan. 22 at Reynolds Coliseum on to watch the Wolfpack Women take on the Lady Tar Heels.

  • National Deep-Water Exercise Month at aquatics center brings aerobics classes
    As a part of the celebration of Deep Water Exercise Month, the Dinah E. Gore Fitness & Aquatics Center is offering free introduction to deep-water aerobics classes. These special classes will be offered at 10 a.m. Feb. 13 and 5:30 p.m. Feb. 15.

    North baseball fish fry set for Feb. 18 The annual North Brunswick baseball fish fry will be 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Feb. 18 at the NBHS baseball field. Plates are $6 each and include boneless fish fillets, cole slaw, baked beans and hushpuppies. Fifteen or more plates can be delivered. All proceeds go to the baseball program at NBHS.     Brunswick umpires’ meeting Feb. 5 The Brunswick County Umpires Association is seeking baseball and softball umpires for the 2012 season. Those interested must have knowledge of the game, be able to attend clinics and meetings, pass certification and be able to travel. Members’ fee and certification fee are also mandatory.     Free throw competition Jan. 28 The Knights of Columbus Our Lady of the Rosary Council 9039 annual free throw competition is 9 a.m. Jan. 28 at the Shallotte Middle School gym. This event is free and open to anyone ages 10-14. Winners in each age group will be eligible for the regional competition at the end of February.     Four Brunswick County athletes won medals in the Special Olympics North Carolina Winter Games. Richard Cummings in the AS Alpine glide (yellow) won a silver medal. Derrick Green in the AS Alpine novice slalom (green) won a bronze medal. Chris Robinson in the AS Alpine novice slalom (green) won a bronze medal. Adrianne Tribble in the AS Alpine Novice Slalom (green) won a silver medal. Three received participation ribbons: Matthew Hoffman, AS Alpine novice slalom (green), Dion Smith, AS Alpine novice slalom (green) and Juan Velez, AS Alpine novice slalom (green).
