Inspired by “the seeds of patriotism,” Mike Krzyzewski, Dean Smith and Kay Yow each coached USA basketball teams to the gold medal in the Olympics.
That means their teams beat the best teams in the world. Sherlock Holmes would therefore deduce at that time, they were the best coaches in the world.
But the trio was honored June 29 not for how much they won but for how they won. They each ran successful collegiate programs for 30-some years with high player graduation rates and without a shred of scandal.

On USG Products Night June 25 at Myrtle Beach Speedway, races in three divisions saw each winner in a return trip to victory lane.
In the Mini Stock 20-lap race, Mark Evans took a wild ride that ended with a wicked hit to the inside track wall. Adam Fulford took the lead to win his fourth race of 2011. Diddle Floyd, Willie Fulford, Eric McKinnon, Dub Fulford, Bryant Barnhill and Evans were in the top seven.
Adam Fulford leads in points by 10 over Willie Fulford. Dub Floyd is third, 20 points out of first.

Nighttime is the right time, especially Saturday night for ModSpace driver Chad McCumbee.
The lyrics from the classic song by Nappy Brown and Ray Charles were appropriate for the most recent ARCA Racing Series race.
McCumbee had another top-10 finish, this one Saturday at the Winchester ARCA 200. This was the seventh straight top-10 finish for Andy Belmont Racing and the No. 1 ModSpace Ford.
In NASCAR Late Model racing Saturday at Myrtle Beach Speedway, the two 35-lap races were swept by Justin Milliken, of Ocean Isle Beach. Milliken is a third-generation driver whose grandfather began his career in 1958.
