  • North’s boys, South’s girls win track meet
    Staff Report The North Brunswick High School boys’ track and field team dominated in winning a tri-meet with South Brunswick and West Brunswick on March 21 at South. Sophomore Chris Graham won the 100 in 10.55, qualifying for a regional. Senior Graham Rivenbark won the 300-meter hurdles in 44.31. Freshman Latrell Hill won the 400 in 54 seconds. Junior J.J. Batts won the 800 in 2:07. Senior Adam Jacobs won the high jump (6-0) and the 110-meter hurdles (15.34).

  • Junior Open tennis tourney this weekend
    By Fay Ahuja Special to The Beacon On Saturday and Sunday, the Brunswick County Junior Open tennis tournament will take place at the Ocean Isle Beach Park tennis courts. The tennis starts at 8:30 a.m. each day. This is a USTA-sanctioned event with a 16-draw limit. There will be boys’ and girls’ divisions for ages up to 10, 12, 14, 16 and 18.   • Cougars defeat Trojans in tennis
    Staff Report South Brunswick beat West Brunswick 6-3 in a conference singles match March 14. In singles, West’s Jason Watts beat Gabe Azzato 6-3, 7-5. South’s Caleb Stanley beat Ray King 6-1, 6-0. South’s Noah Pieper beat Tyler Micallef 6-0, 6-0. South’s Joey Kronenwetter beat Emillio Bonifacio 6-3, 6-0. South’s Lance Watts beat Jarrett Walls 6-3, 6-2. West’s Luke Bollinger beat Caleb Hemphill 2-6, 7-5, 10-8. South swept the doubles.
  • Many county players on all-conference teams
    Staff Report Waccamaw Conference coaches have selected all-conference teams for the winter sports. Below are the selections from the three county high schools. Boys’ basketball From the conference championship North Brunswick team, Adam Jacobs, Nik Sloan and Jaeden Phillips are on the first team. Jacobs, a senior guard, averaged 16.1 points a game, making 55 percent of his 2-point field-goal attempts. He averaged 6.5 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 2.9 steals a game.

    Southport tennis courts open March 16 The new tennis courts at Southport will have a grand opening ceremony March 16. Round robins and other activities are scheduled. Call Bill Davis at 845-8812 for more details. Kids free tennis day is March 23 Brunswick County Parks and Recreation is sponsoring a tennis day for those ages 4-18.   • Local cyclists take 280-mile tour
    By Harvey Camp Special to The Beacon Cyclists Steve Bruce, 45, Edward Flynn, 62, and myself, 68, began a cycling tour Feb. 16. We drove to Miami, where we spent the first night in a local hotel. The next morning, we drove to the home of an acquaintance of Bruce, where we left the van and loaded our tents, sleeping bags and cycling gear onto our bikes and headed toward Key Largo, where we spent our first night on the road.  
  • Southport Baptist has its first baseball clinic
    Southport Baptist Church had its first baseball/softball clinic Feb. 16 at Bill Smith Park and nearly 100 students ages 5-12 participated. The kids learned fundamental skills about hitting, fielding and throwing from volunteer coaches from the church and local schools. They also enjoyed fun, fellowship and free snacks provided by the church’s outreach committee and other church donors. Event organizers said Southport Baptist would be planning more sports clinics for local students as an outreach to the community.
