  • Brunswick County Tennis Association championship teams decided
    The Brunswick County Tennis Association had a season-ending round robin at the Ocean Isle Beach Tennis Center. Members of the BCTA ladies’ advanced league championship team captain Karen MacKinnon and members Kathy Babbis, Dawn Caporaso, Jan Denney, Margie Foote, Barbara McMichael, Kathy Pace, Ann Perry, Linda Peterson and Martha Reese.

  • Coasters win silver medal in N.C. Senior Games
    The Brunswick County Coasters, competing in the 75-and-older age group, finished second in the recent North Carolina Senior Games basketball tournament. The Coasters were one of two county teams in the state championship tournament, played Oct. 29-30 in Greenville at East Carolina University. The other team was the Force, who competed in the 65-69 age group.

  • Youth basketball registration set
    The Brunswick County Parks and Recreation Department is offering youth basketball. Registration is open until Nov. 19 for youth basketball. This is open to boys and girls in the first through sixth grades. Practice begins in December and games are in January and February.     The Calabash VFW steel tip Dart League results for 2 Nov: First: Darleen Riley, Ray Ketcham and Pat Perryman. Second: Jack Goin, Jerry Morano and Ken Yusko. Third third were Hank Olson, Sandy May and John Hinkman.  On Nov. 9, Darleen Riley, Hugo Kosmel and Pinky Hinkman were first. Second: Pete McGerr, John Hinkman and Barbara Clark. Third: Andy Kocsis, Winnie Kosmel and Neal Elmire.

    BCC VOLLEYBALL TRYOUTS set for NOV. 23 Brunswick Community College is looking for incoming freshman to join the volleyball program for the 2011 season. Tryouts will be 7-8:30 p.m. Nov. 23 at the Dinah E. Gore Fitness & Aquatics Center. BCC volleyball finished its third season with an 8-8 record in Region 10. Freshman outside hitter Hannah Sofield earned a spot on the All-Region team and freshman middle blocker Danielle Blunt earned All-Region honorable mention. Coach Melissa Everitt was voted the NJCAA Region 10 Coach of the Year.

  • Brunswick Juniors Youth volleyball club to have tryouts
     The Brunswick Juniors Volleyball Club (BJVBC) will begin its season Nov. 13. The Brunswick Juniors Volleyball Club is a newly established USAVB club program and is part of the Carolina Regional Volleyball Association.  BJVBC serves juniors players in the coastal southeast North Carolina and northeast South Carolina areas. Players from public and private schools, all surrounding counties and experienced or inexperienced in volleyball are invited to try out for BJVBC.

  • Shallotte football teams win league conference titles
    Shallotte teams have won regular-season championships in the Brunswick Football League. In the Senior Division, the Shallotte Bucs beat the Lockwood Folly Chiefs 27-6 on Saturday and finished 7-0. The Bucs scored 188 points and gave up 30. The Town Creek Bulldogs finished second (6-1). The Shallotte Pirates beat the Leland Panthers 6-0 on Saturday and finished 2-5.

    Elks Hoop Shoot has begun About 3,000 pupils in elementary and middle schools in Shallotte and Calabash are competing this month in the first stage of the Elks National Hoop Shoot Free Throw Contest. The Hoop Shoot has divisions for boys and girls ages 8-9, 10-11 and 12-13. Contestants will shoot the for the best-of-25 free throws. The finals will take place at 9:30 a.m. Dec. 11 at Shallotte Middle School.
