    Bowl Challenge at Planet Fun The Brunswick Beacon ACC Basket-BOWL Challenge will have a meeting at 7 p.m. Jan. 6 at Planet Fun. The eight-week bowling league begins 7 p.m. Jan. 13. Gore Fitness & Aquatics Center.  BCC coach Ashlyn Burke and her team will conduct the clinics. The first clinic begins at 8:30 a.m. Jan. 15. BCC plays Spartanburg Methodist at 1 p.m. that day. The second clinic begins at 8:30 a.m. Jan. 29. BCC plays Louisburg College at 1 p.m. that day.

    Fitness classes set for spring This is the 2011 spring fitness schedule offered by Brunswick County Parks and Recreation. To register for any of the fitness classes or for more information, call Ruthie McHugh at (910) 253-2583.  Total Body Fusion: 6-7 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays Jan. 4-May 26 at Lockwood Folly Community Building. Fee is $30 month, $8 drop-in. Zumba: 8:15-9:15 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays Jan. 4-May 26 at Body Dimensions. Fee: is $35 per month, $10 drop-in.
  • BCTA plans youth tennis events
    The new youth tennis committee of the BCTA met Friday at Jumpin’ Java in Shallotte. It agreed the purpose would be to provide lots of opportunities for youth 18 and under to play tennis in Brunswick County.  “There are several ways that we are going to do this,” said Karen Holbrook. “First, we will sponsor four tournaments annually. 
  • Dance 4 Life going to Disney
    Oak Island’s Dance 4 Life Inc. performed recently at the Oak Island Christmas tree lighting for the third year in a row. That was followed by a fun day in the Oak Island Christmas parade and the  annual studio Christmas party. While finishing up, owner Darcy Deal received a phone call from Walt Disney World informing her the studio had been accepted to perform at Walt Disney World in May 2011. Deal, a 25-year dance veteran, opened her dance studio four years ago, following her dream of showing local children the world.

    YOUTH TENNIS LESSONS Brunswick County Parks and Recreation is accepting registrations for spring youth tennis lessons. Lessons are at Smithville Park and Ocean Isle Beach Park. Age group and times vary by location. All classes are from 3:45-7 p.m. on Wednesdays. Class fee is $60. Call Ruthie McHugh at (910) 253-2583 to register.
