  • McCumbee finishes 22nd at Talladega Superspeedway
    Chad McCumbee drove his No. 71 ModSpace Chevrolet Impala SS to a 22nd-place in finish Sunday in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at the Talladega, Ala., Superspeedway. McCumbee, who started 22nd, presently pilots the No. 1 ModSpace car in the ARCA Racing Series. He had seven top-10 finishes this season. The 26-year-old made his NASCAR Sprint Cup debut at Pocono Raceway in the No. 45 Petty Enterprises entry in 2007 and gained additional experience in 2008 making six starts under the Petty Enterprises banner.

  • Dixie Boys state champs honored with resolution
    On Oct. 18, the Brunswick County Board of Commissioners honored the Brunswick County Dixie Boys All-Star Team that won the 2010 North Carolina Dixie Boys state tournament and played in the 2010 Dixie Boys World Series in Christiansburg, Va., where it finished third. Commissioner Scott Phillips read the resolution in honor of the 2010 Brunswick County Dixie Boys baseball team and then presented each player a framed copy of the resolution.

    Stand 11 steps away, check your stance, eye the center of the target, pull the arrow back, feel the tension of the compound bow, take a slow breath, aim and… release. Bull’s-eye.  For months this has been the regimen for each competitive archery student on The Roger Bacon Academy’s archery team. And that practice has paid off big time on a global scale at the National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP) World Tournament.

  • Local Cape Fear swimmers achieve time standards
    Three county swimmers in the Cape Fear Aquatic Club achieved USA Swimming national age group time standards in the first meet of the indoor season. Lucas Kuhn, in the boys’ 8U, and Teddy Johnson, in the boys’ 10U and McKenzie White in the girls’ 10U, met the marks in the three-day meet hosted by the Waves of Wilmington Swim Club. Kuhn was seventh in the 25-yard butterfly (22.55 seconds), eighth in the 25 freestyle (19:21), eighth in the 25 backstroke (24.79) and 15th in the 25 breaststroke (31.72).  These were personal-best times.

    Sloup wins non-league match In a three-team nonconference golf match among the South Brunswick, Ashley and Hoggard high schools Oct. 7 at the St. James Plantation Founder Club, South’s Ashley Sloup was the winner, shooting a 49. The golfers played the back nine, a par-36 of 2,600 yards. South’s Stefanie Zapf shot a 51 and Madison Brendle and Abby Kjome 53s in leading the Cougars to the team victory over Ashley, 153-179. Molly Gore shot a 55.

  • Oyster Festival road race is Saturday
    The 30th annual Oyster Festival Road Race is 8 a.m. Oct. 16 at Ocean Isle Beach. Runners may compete in the 1-mile fun run, the 5K or the 10K. Registration closing date is 11:59 p.m. Oct. 14. The fee is $35. The course is flat asphalt with some areas of hard sand. The start and finish lines are near the community center. All race participants will be able to use their race number for free entry into the N.C. Oyster Festival that day. The first 400 to register will get a free special edition road race T-shirt. Walkers are welcome. Pets and skates are not allowed.
