A fundraising night for the West Brunswick High School football team will take place during 5-9 p.m. May 20 at Planet Fun. Planet Fun and Starz Grille will donate a portion of the spending to the West football team. Those who buy a $10 gift card will receive a free $10 bonus game card. Starz Grille prices cut 20 percent during the fundraiser.
The 10U Girls Soccer team improved its record over the weekend to 7-1 in the Cape Fear Soccer League. Team Shallotte won 9-1, getting seven goals coming between the duo of Claire McNeil, who had four, and Hayley Giordano, who had three. Hannah Hewitt and Ashley Oakes also each had a goal.
Ocean City Chevrolet once again is supporting Shallotte Dixie Youth Baseball.
During this season, which began Saturday with games at Shallotte Park, Ocean City Chevrolet will provide baseball equipment, instructional clinics, a monetary donation and an opportunity to raise an additional $10,000 in funds through a Chevy vehicle giveaway fundraiser. The effort by Ocean City Chevrolet is part of the Chevy Youth Baseball initiative from March through July.

The East Coast Surfing Championships—the oldest-running surfing contest in the United States and the largest on the East Coast—took place Aug. 21-24 at Virginia Beach, Va. Jesse McCrery won the Masters Championship (for those 18-34) and Owen Moffett the Men’s Championship.
Michael Powell, a former Men’s Division champion, finished second in the Open Championship.

West Brunswick lost its first game, 7-2, to host Alexandria, La., on Sunday morning at the Johnny Downs Sports Complex. Alexandria had opened the World Series on Saturday morning and beat Florida 7-6.
SOUTHPORT—Brunswick County pitchers held Columbus County to three hits but Columbus went on to beat Brunswick 3-1 and win the Dixie Boys state championship Friday at Smithville District Park.
A leadoff home run by Gary Williams against Grayson Bullock gave Brunswick County, a team of 14-year-olds, a 1-0 lead in the first inning.
The Brunswick County Tennis Association (BCTA) held its end of the Spring Tennis League round robin May 17 at South Brunswick High School. The round-robin format includes a random pairing of players who play five games then rotate to the next partner. There were 48 players (which is a record number for BCTA) attending the event and the six courts at SBHS were full all morning. It was a picture perfect day for tennis with the temperature in the 70s and not much wind.
Three Brunswick County swimmers won gold medals in the Special Olympics North Carolina Summer Games, which ended June 8 in Raleigh and Cary.
Nearly 600 athletes from across the state competed in aquatics, gymnastics, powerlifting and volleyball. Unfortunately, because of extreme heat, competition in athletics and softball was canceled.
