  • Waccamaw student receives BEMC camp scholarship
     Timothy Bellamy of Waccamaw School was awarded one of the three basketball camp scholarships by Brunswick Electric Membership Corporation and N.C. Touchstone Energy. Katie Evans of Nakina Middle School and Louis Godwin of Williams Township Elementary School also received scholarships. The Touchstone Energy Sports Camp program provides students a unique educational and athletic opportunity on a college campus. Camp scholarship winners will learn  fundamental basketball skills, be encouraged to set goals and establish new friendships.
  • Dub Fulford gets first victory of season at Myrtle Beach
    Myrtle Beach Speedway celebrated Memorial Day weekend by bringing all five racing divisions back to the track for racing May 29. To entertain the crowd while the drivers had their weekly drivers meeting, the track had its third bike race of the 2010 season. Four of the five participants started from turn four, while one participant started at the halfway point due to the age difference. 
  • Brunswick County Gator Games conclude with awards ceremony
    The 22nd annual Brunswick County Gator Senior Games and SilverArts had 265 participants in 80 athletic artistic events. The first-, second- and third-place winners in each age category male and female, qualified to compete against the 54 other local Games in Raleigh and other areas of state this fall. The Gator Senior Games and SilverArts began April 7 with opening ceremonies at Town Creek Park and ended on May 20 at county government center with the celebration social and medals ceremony. 
  • Inspirations Dance Centre wins awards at competition
     Inspirations Dance Centre participated in Marvonna Talent Competition in Myrtle Beach, S.C. Inspirations Dance Centre dancers were awarded “Mega Xtreme” and “The Max” ratings for one group dance, one duet and seven solos.

  • West football fundraiser May 20 at Planet Fun
     A fundraising night for the West Brunswick High School football team will take place during 5-9 p.m. May 20 at Planet Fun. Planet Fun and Starz Grille will donate a portion of the spending to the West football team. Those who buy a $10 gift card will receive a free $10 bonus game card. Starz Grille prices cut 20 percent during the fundraiser.
  • Shallotte youth soccer team improves to 7-1
    The 10U Girls Soccer team improved its record over the weekend to 7-1 in the Cape Fear Soccer League. Team Shallotte won 9-1, getting seven goals coming between the duo of Claire McNeil, who had four, and Hayley Giordano, who had three. Hannah Hewitt and Ashley Oakes also each had a goal.
  • Ocean Ridge Bowling League honors bowlers
    The Ocean Ridge Plantation Bowling League concluded its 11th season at its annual bowling banquet April 1 at the Elks Lodge in Calabash.
  • Opening Day
    Ocean City Chevrolet once again is supporting Shallotte Dixie Youth Baseball. During this season, which began Saturday with games at Shallotte Park, Ocean City Chevrolet will provide baseball equipment, instructional clinics, a monetary donation and an opportunity to raise an additional $10,000 in funds through a Chevy vehicle giveaway fundraiser. The effort by Ocean City Chevrolet is part of the Chevy Youth Baseball initiative from March through July.
  • Ocean Isle Beach surfers win championships
    Ocean Isle Beach once again can claim to have two of the best surfers on the East Coast. The East Coast Surfing Championships—the oldest-running surfing contest in the United States and the largest on the East Coast—took place Aug. 21-24 at Virginia Beach, Va. Jesse McCrery won the Masters Championship (for those 18-34) and Owen Moffett the Men’s Championship. Michael Powell, a former Men’s Division champion, finished second in the Open Championship.
