  • Ocean Flippers gymnastics teams win S.C. state crown 14 years in a row
    Gymnastics & More’s Ocean Flippers gymnastics teams came home with two team titles at the state championships in Newberry and Rock Hill, S.C., last weekend. The Level 9 team brought home the South Carolina state team gold with a final score of 110.125—more than three points ahead of the second-place team. With an all-around champion in Level 7 (Ana Smith), Level 8 (Faith Burns) and Level 9 (Gilly Hogue), as well as the Level 9 team title, the Ocean Flippers have successfully been S.C. state champions 14 years in a row.
  • Oak Island Lighthouse Run and Walk set
    OAK ISLAND—Tennis shoes, shorts, tank tops and sunscreen will be the uniform of the day during the 10th Annual Oak Island Lighthouse 5K & 10K Run and Walk. The run/walk will be on Saturday, April 12, beginning at 8:30 a.m. Race-day registration will be at the N.C. Baptist Assembly from 6:30 to 8 a.m. After registering, participants will be bused to the start area at the Brunswick County Airport for the 10K and to Caswell Beach Town Hall for the 5K.
  • Church league begins tournament
    Shallotte First, Liberty Tabernacle, Jennies Branch and New Beginnings notched victories March 17 as the Brunswick County men’s church league began its season-ending double elimination tournament. Richie Caison had 21 points for Shallotte First, and David Batten added 14 in a 56-28 victory against Sharon Methodist. Chris Stanley led Sharon Methodist with 13 points. Willis Stevenson had 25 points and Kendrick Frink 23 as Liberty Tabernacle whipped Beach Assembly 93-41. Todd Summerlin led Beach Assembly with 11 points and Corey Brown had 10.
  • Clardy rolls 761 series at Brunswick Bowling Center
    Michael Clardy rolled a 761 series, one of four 700 sets bowled at the Brunswick County Bowling Center last week. Clardy had games of 246, 237 and 278 in the McDonald’s Amusement Classic league March 10. Rick Lachance and Sam Harris each bowled 708 sets in the McDonald’s league while Derek Frink had a 705 in the Extravaganza League March 12. McDONALD’s AMUSEMENT

    Decker one pin short of perfect game Terry Decker fell just a pin short of a perfect game as he rolled a 289 game as part of a 789 series in the McDonald’s Amusement Classic League at the Brunswick County Bowling Center March 3. It was one of two 700 series rolled in the league. Decker’s other games were 233 and 267. Mike Albert had the other 700 series, rolling a 711 on games of 234, 212 and 265. McDONALD’s AMUSEMENT

    Jenrette, Jordan set pace with 740 series at Brunswick County Bowling Center Eric Jenrette and Robert Jordan each bowled a 740 series, two of four 700 sets turned in last week at the Brunswick County Bowling Center. Jenrette had games of 226, 247 and 267 for his 740. It was one of three 700s rolled in the McDonald’s Amusement Classic League on Feb. 25. Jordan rolled his 740 in the Williams Carpet Classic League on Feb. 29. He had games of 247, 268 and 225.
  • Mount Calvary, Pleasant View stay unbeaten in church league
    Brunswick County Men’s Church Basketball League leaders Mount Calvary and Pleasant View kept their undefeated records intact last week. Mount Calvary posted wins against Shallotte First Baptist and Sharon Methodist to run its record to 10-0. Pleasant View beat Beach Assembly and Mount Olive to move to 9-0. Feb. 25 scores •Mount Calvary 67, Shallotte First Baptist 51. McReese Vereen scored 16 points and Thomas McMillian added 14 for Mount Calvary. Leading scorers for First Baptist were Justin Whiteside with 11 points and Richie Caison with 10.

    Evans leads bowlers with 696 series Jeffery Evans and Steven Clemmons came up just pins short of 700 series in bowling action last week at Brunswick County Bowling Center in Shallotte. Evans rolled a 696 on games of 247, 238 and 211 in the Extravaganza League Feb. 20 while Clemmons had a 695 set with games of 226, 253 and 216 in the Williams Carpet Classic League Feb. 22. WILLIAMS CARPET Other high series: Delwood Johnson 211, 212, 243—666, Chris Chappell 247, 226—650 and Bob Merritt 215, 209—617.
  • Mount Calvary, Pleasant View stay unbeaten in church league
    Brunswick County Men’s Church Basketball League leaders Mount Calvary and Pleasant View kept their undefeated records in tact last week. Mount Calvary defeated Beach Assembly 84-41 to improve its record to 8-0. Pleasant View posted a 106-62 win over Ocean View to move to 7-0. Feb. 18 scores •Liberty Tabernacle 61, Jennies Branch 48. Kendrick Frink scored 27 points and Rodwyn Frink had 11 to lead Liberty Tabernacle. High scorers for Jennies Branch included Brandon Stephens with 20 and Andrew Stephens with 15.

    Clardy leads bowlers with 759 series Michael Clardy rolled a 759 set as the classic leagues at the Brunswick County Bowling Center produced three 700 series in the past week. Clardy had games of 259, 244 and 206 in the McDonald’s Amusement Classic League on Feb. 11. Maurice Webster bowled a 742 and Rhonda Sabiston a 713 in the Williams Carpet Classic League on Feb. 15. Webster had games of 203, 233 and 279 while Sabiston rolled 264, 257 and 192. McDONALD’S AMUSEMENT
