  • Knights of Columbus has free throw contest
    Our Lady of the Rosary Knights of Columbus Council Number 9039 had the annual Knights of Columbus free throw championship Nov. 17 at Shallotte Middle School. Twenty-nine boys and girls ages 10-14 from Brunswick County competed. The following girls won their age group: Shelby Everhart, Telea Vereen, Sadie Benoy and Kaitlyn Bellamy. The following boys won their age group: Jadyn Parker, De’Andre’ Clarida, Campbell Pryor, Caden Ward and Brandon Patterson. The winners will continue on to the district level early next year.
  • Brunswick Thunder finishes first season 30-2
    The Brunswick Thunder, a 9U baseball team in its first season, finished unbeaten in seven tournaments before finishing third in the USSSA Winter World Series at Rocky Mount. The team finished 30-2 overall. Team members are Bud Baldwin, Ty Lawson, John Lawson Cook, Guiliano Maggioli, Garrett Emmons, Maddux Morrow, Landon Hill, Spencer Sievers, Brent Holland, Grayson Simpson and Eian King. The coaches are Brian Simpson and Nicole Norris-Simpson. In the tournament at Grand Park at Myrtle Beach, S.C., the Thunder finished 4-0.

  • Shock finishes 9-0
    Staff Report The Brush Dental U13 girls Shock finished the season with two wins, ending its season in the Pleasure Island Soccer Association 9-0. This is the Shock’s third straight championship and runs its unbeaten streak to 32 games. The Shock won the first game with a goal in the first half from Kira Frawley off an assist from Caroline Hawthorne. From there the Shock relied on its strong defense and finished the game with a 1-0 shutout, its fifth of the year.
  • Shallotte girls’ soccer team finishes season third in league
    Staff Report The Shallotte U18 girls’ soccer team ended its season in the Cape Fear Soccer Club recreation league with a 3-0 win over Osmotica Pharmaceuticals earlier this month at Veterans Park in Wilmington. Shallotte finished the fall season in third place and with a 4-3-1 record, which included three shutouts. The team comprises a broad mix of high school-aged girls, including new freshmen as well as current junior varsity and varsity players from the West Brunswick teams.

    Napolitano all-conference for Wingate Nick Napolitano is one of seven Wingate University football players on All-South Atlantic Conference teams. Napolitano, a West Brunswick graduate, is second-team all-conference defense. In his first season as a starter, Napolitano (6-foot-3, 245 pounds) led Wingate with 11.5 tackles for loss (41 yards) and 7.5 quarterback sacks (32 yards). He led the SAC in quarterback sacks.

Competitors in different age groups for girls and boys will shoot 15 free throws and the winners will receive trophies and advance to another competition.     White is all-conference in volleyball Carly White has been named to the 2012 All-Conference Carolinas volleyball third team. White, a West Brunswick graduate, earned all-conference honors for the second straight year. A 6-foot-4 junior middle blocker from Ash, White led the conference with 0.89 blocks per set and was also among the conference leaders in hitting percentage and kills per set. Her .332 hitting percentage was the third highest in the conference and she ranked ninth with 2.90 kills per set.
