  • Shallotte Shock improves to 7-0
     The Brush Dental U13 girls’ soccer team faced off against the only other undefeated team in the Pleasure Island Soccer Association on Saturday and won 3-2. Ashley Oakes advanced the ball deep down the field and found Mia Adcock who scored, starting the Shock off with an early goal that lifted the team’s confidence early.

  • Sloup shoots an even-par 36
    Staff Report In the final nine-hole tourney of the conference season, South Brunswick junior Ashley Sloup shot an even-par 36 Oct. 8 on the Players Course at St. James Plantation. The yardage played was about 2,400 yards. Sloup overcame a double-bogey 5 on the second hole by making a birdie on third and sixth holes. She also made a birdie on the par-5 ninth hole. Her other bogey was on the par-3 seventh. South won the team title, as Janzen Jones shot a 45 and Jordan Saunders a 50.
  • South Brunswick sweeps conference tennis titles
    Staff Report South Brunswick High School tennis players won championships in the 3A Waccamaw Conference tournament Oct. 9 at Ocean Isle Beach Park Tennis Center. In doubles, South juniors Morgan Gilbert and Brooke Munroe beat senior teammates Lilly Michelakis and Julia Baldiga in straight sets, winning the final set 6-4. Munroe, a junior, was part of a doubles championship team last year, too.

    Cedric Simmons update Cedric Simmons scored nine points and had nine rebounds in Enel Brindisi’s 78-69 victory Oct. 14 in an Italian professional basketball league game. Simmons started and played 25 minutes. He also blocked a shot and had two assists. Enel Brindisi is 1-2 in the 16-team league.
  • BAC Gators make debut in Wilmington meet
    Thirty swimmers from Brunswick Aquatic Club’s Gators’ swim team competed in the annual Commotion at the Ocean swim meet Oct. 5-7 at UNC-Wilmington, hosted by the Waves of Wilmington. The newly formed, 60-member team began practicing in September at the Brunswick County Community College Dinah E. Gore Fitness & Aquatics Center. This short-course swimming season is BAC’s debut season in USA-Swimming competition.
  • Shock escapes with a win
    The Brush Dental U13 Shock soccer team had its toughest test of the season Saturday, winning 4-3. The Shock gave up an early goal and had to play from behind for the first time all year. Logan Shultz got the Shock going with her first goal, tying the game at 1-1. The Shock then gave up a second goal and went into the half down 2-1. “It was a good test for the girls as we haven’t had to play from behind all year and it tested their mental toughness,” coach Mark Giordano said.
  • Oyster Festival road race is Sunday
    Staff Report The N.C. Oyster Festival Road Race is Sunday on the island at Ocean Isle Beach. The event on flat asphalt consists of 5K and 10K runs and a 1-mile fun run. The 1-mile run begins at 8 a.m. The 5K and 10K runs begin at 8:30 a.m. Pets and inline skaters are not allowed. The fee is $35. Late registration fee is $40 Oct. 12-16.   • West teams win cross-country races
    Staff Report The West Brunswick High School cross-country teams won their only home meets of the season Oct. 9. In the boys’ meet, West and South Brunswick each scored 29 points, but West won on the basis of having a higher No. 6 runner. North had 94 points and Pender 103. Whiteville and Trask had no scores. In the girls’ meet, West scored 35 points and South 41. North had 81 and Pender 87. Whiteville and Trask had no scores. This was the last regular-season meet before the championship meet Oct. 16.
  • WBHS Trojans split conference games
    Staff Report West Brunswick beat West Bladen 9-0 in a conference soccer game Oct. 10. Junior Cody Postich scored four goals. Normally a defender, he played forward as a substitute for the injured Scottie Melvin. Postich also had an assist. Senior midfielder Rodrigo Cardenas scored two goals. Junior forward Luis Espinosa, senior midfielder Jonathan Newhouse and Tristan Murphy each scored a goal.
