He beat Evan Thompson (Jacksonville Beach, Fla.), 20; Cam Richards (Garden City Beach, S.C.), 16; and Californian Griffin Colapinto (San Clemente, Calif.), 14.
West Bladen beat West Brunswick 7-2 in a conference tennis match Oct. 2 at Ocean Isle Beach Park Tennis Center.
In singles, Penny Watts (WBR) defeated Lexi Storms 6-4, 6-4. Hannah Dowless (WBL) defeated Sarah Harman 6-3, 6-3. Erica Tanner (WBL) defeated Victoria Jordan 6-3, 6-3. Nicole Nye (WBL) defeated Anna James 7-5, 1-0, retired. Josie Ludlum (WBL) defeated Hayley Grimes 6-3, 6-3. Alicia Avellaneda (WBL) defeated Ashley Carter 6-3, 6-3.
The Brush Dental Shock U13 girls’ soccer team improved to 5-0 this season with a 5-0 win. The Shock used a balanced attack, with five girls each scoring a goal.
Ashley Oakes followed a shot from Hayley Giordano that hit off the crossbar and Oakes put it in the back of the net for a 1-0 lead.
Hayley Giordano, Kayla Crouch and Caroline Hawthorne then added one each in the first half to lead 4-0.
Brunswick County Parks and Recreation is accepting registrations for tennis lessons for youth and adults. Lessons are available throughout Brunswick County and are open to a wide range of abilities. Adult lessons are 5:30-
7:45 p.m. Tuesdays or Wednesdays Oct. 16-Nov. 21 and times are determined by skill level. The fee is $65 per person. Youth lessons are 3:30-6:30 p.m. Mondays Oct. 22-Nov. 26 and times are determined by age. The fee is $65 per child.
A second public meeting about the renovations at Waccamaw Park will take place 6-8 p.m. Oct. 18 at the Waccamaw Community Building in Ash. Brunswick County Parks and Recreation will host the meeting in which the new site plan for the Waccamaw Park Renovation Project will be discussed.
Ashley Sloup won her fifth conference golf tournament of the season Oct. 1 at Brierwood in leading South Brunswick to the team title.
Sloup, a junior, shot a 6-over-par 42. No one else shot in the 40s. Sloup played the last three holes 3-4-2.
The golfers played from the gold tees on a 2,821-yard layout, about 400 yards longer than the first time they played there.
Adult Halloween tennis tournament
The adult Halloween tennis tournament, organized by Brunswick Parks and Recreation, is 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Oct. 27 at Ocean Isle Beach Park (rain date is Oct. 28). This is for intermediate and advanced tennis players ages 18 and older. Singles fee is $15. Century doubles fee is $25. Same gender and mixed doubles fee is $25. Costumes encouraged. The Brush Dental Shock 13U girls’ soccer team won a tough match 1-0 to remain unbeaten for the year. The Shock again played up two full-age divisions against 15- and 16-year-old girls. Despite being greatly undersized, the Shock was able to shut out its third opponent out of four it has faced this year.
“The Shock prides itself on being the most fit team on the field and use constant pressure on the ball to wear teams down,” coach Mark Giordano said.
