The Brush Dental Shock U13 girls’ soccer team started its new season with a 5-0 win in the Pleasure Island Soccer Association.
“The Shock have new challenges this year, playing on a full-sized field 11-against-11 for the first time,” coach Mark Giordano said.
“The team did a great job of keeping their spacing and passing to open players creating scoring opportunities.”
Mia Adcock led the Shock with two scores, and Ashley Oakes, Caroline Hawthorne and Kira Frawley each scored one.
Mount Olive’s Carly White has been selected as the NCAA Division II Conference Carolinas Women’s Volleyball Player of the Week during week No. two of the 2012 season.
The junior middle blocker, who is a West Brunswick High School graduate, recorded 17 kills in Mount Olive’s three-set win over Peach Belt Conference member UNC Pembroke and reached double figures in kills in all four matches at the MOC Invitational as the Trojans posted a 3-1 record and finished as tournament runner-up, coming within two points of winning the title.
In the spirit of teamwork taught by youth sports, Ocean City Chevrolet is teaming up with Brunswick United Soccer Club to provide their players and coaches soccer kits filled with equipment bags, pop-up nets, sport cones, scrimmage vests, T-shirts, a sponsorship check for $500 and an opportunity to help raise funds.
Brunswick Closer to Home tourney Sept. 26
On Sept. 26, the Brunswick Plantation Ladies Golf Association is hosting a golf tournament to benefit Lower Cape Fear Hospice, in particular, the new SECU Hospice House of Brunswick in Supply.
The day will begin with breakfast and registration at 7:30 a.m. followed by a shotgun start at 9 a.m. Format is captain’s choice.
McCumbee, Saini 31st in sports car race
Chad McCumbee and Jason Saini finished 31st out of 34 entries in the GRAND-AM Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge action at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca on Saturday in Monterey, Calif.
They completed 54 of 71 laps in their C.J. Wilson Racing Mazda MX-5.
West Bladen’s Lady Knights beat West Brunswick 7-2 Sept. 6 in conference match. The Trojans’ only victories were by Penny Watts at No. 1 singles and Anna James at No. 4 singles.
West Bladen is 2-2 in the conference, 5-2 overall. West Brunswick is 0-2 in the conference.
For the third year, the annual Sunset at Sunset Community Block Party will begin with its 5K run/fitness walk for adults and children on Oct. 6 at Sunset Beach Island. The fun race is appropriate for all types and levels of walkers and runners alike.
Brunswick County Youth Basketball League sign-ups
Registration is open for the Brunswick County Parks and Recreation Youth Basketball League, open to boys and girls in first through sixth grades. Mandatory skills analysis is Nov. 16.

West Brunswick High School will honor its 1991, 1992 and 1993 championship football teams on Sept. 21 on Champions Night at M.H. Rourk Stadium.
The Trojans won the Class 2A East Regional in 1991 and finished second in state. The 1992 and 1993 teams won state championships.
