  • Fall Brawl top catch is record-setting 56.80 pounds

     Jay Bucklen’s Cape Contender finished first with a record-setting 56.80-pound king mackerel in the Yellowfin/Yamaha Fall Brawl King Classic, based at the Ocean Isle Fishing Center.

    Bucklen, of Wake Forest, and his crew won $15,053. It also finished first in the 23-foot-and-smaller boat category.

  • Many reports of January flounder unusual

    The mild winter is certainly having a positive effect on Brunswick County inshore fishing, especially compared to last year’s harsh stay-at-home conditions. I can’t remember a January in local waters when I have gotten so many reports from anglers catching flounder. The redfish schools roaming the shallows are huge and accessible just about every day.

  • Long Bay reef project gets grant

    The N.C. Marine Fisheries Commission and the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission have approved 14 grants, totaling $1.99 million, for the 2012 cycle. The grants are funded from the N.C. Marine Resources Fund, which receives revenues from the sale of Coastal Recreational Fishing Licenses.

  • Fishermen to rally March 21 in D.C.

    Staff report

    U.S. recreational and commercial fishermen will gather March 21 beside the U.S. Capitol in an organized demonstration supporting the amendment of the Magnuson Stevens Fisheries Conservation and Management Act (Magnuson Act).
    A rally on Feb. 24, 2010, under a United We Fish banner, attracted about 5,000 recreational, commercial and party/charter vessel owners and folks in associated businesses from all over the country to Washington.

    The big cold front blew through Brunswick County last week and led to good inshore fishing last weekend.
    With sunny days and cold nights a strong possibility this weekend, the fishing should be good again. The weather is just cold enough to keep the inshore redfish and speckled trout bite going and not too cold to shut it off, which means anglers working lures to the schools when the sun is up are having good luck.
