  • Fishermen await fall run of bluefish

    The annual fall runs of bluefish along the Carolina coast are eagerly anticipated by fishermen waiting for a chance to tangle with the feisty brutes from the rails of the piers or in the surf. Some bluefish have been caught throughout the summer but it will be later this month and in October when the majority of them show up.

  • Obama economy saves fishing and fish populations in Carolina

    You can’t deny the down economy has not had an impact on the fisheries. However, contrary to its negative impact on your and my pocketbooks, it has been healthy for fishing.
    The result has been fewer people fishing, which in turn means fewer fish killed. Throw in some ridiculous federal regulations and you have the recipe on how to rebuild fish stocks. We have theorized that at some point more fish would be born than captured and the result would be increased fish populations; thus swinging fishing into more catching.

  • Fishing has been solid inshore

    Inshore fishing often turns on the weather and that has certainly been the case for the month of August. Hot days and afternoon thunderstorms have been the rule, and though the temperatures will ease off a bit as we enter September, the familiar forecast calling for storms and rain will continue.
    The effect of almost daily afternoon and evening storms has been felt for anglers: good morning fishing, cloudy and stained water after the thunder boomers and fish more likely to be caught on bait than lures.

    They say patience is a virtue of most good fishermen. Capt. Brant McMullan is without question a great fisherman and his patience is being put to the test like never before. Each day passes with a new accomplishment for Capt. Brant as he faces the most challenging battle of his life recovering from his recent injuries.
    One motivational factor that is a driving force for him is his unrelenting desire to return to his home plowing the offshore waters patiently waiting for that next big bite.

  • Tricky weather but great fishing

    Overall, fishing this past week remained great—tricky, but great.
    Daily thunderstorms that seemed to appear in the blink of an eye kept fishermen on their toes as they bobbed and weaved from spot to spot trying to stay dry and keep catching.
    Between the dynamic weather conditions, inshore, near shore and offshore, fishermen found plenty of action from a variety of species.

  • Fisherman are landing impressive catches, especially king mackerel

    This past week, the offshore fishing continued to produce some impressive catches, especially for the king mackerel tournament fishermen trying to get a read on where they should fish in the next tournaments coming up.
    It seems normally during the past couple years we hear of big kings being caught 100 miles up the coast or 100 miles down the coast. Amazingly, the king mackerel fishing patterns appear to have returned to seasons past, as the focus this week has been on our neighborhood waters.

  • Live bait is the best lure in hot weather

    The weather has cooled slightly but we are still firmly in a summertime pattern ruled by the heat and afternoon and evening thunderstorms. The bite has been slow inshore, while there are more fish moving on the tides at the jetties, in the surf and just offshore.
