  • Rivers Edge gets new great greens

    Rivers Edge is open for play.

    After struggling with inconsistent greens for several years, the owners and managers of Rivers Edge bit the bullet this summer and closed the course for two months to install new Paspallum grass.

    Rivers Edge has long been a local treasure, one of those courses that locals and visitors alike clamor to play. As one visiting friend said to me, “It’s worth the extra money. I love the course!”

    The Beachcombers played at Crown Park. First: Dennis McCann, Bob Byrne, Fred Ortiz and Jim Beairsto at 5-under par. Second: a tie between the team of Bob Smith, Ed Kinney, Ed Hennessey and Paul Michal and the team of Reggie Auten, Hal Riebesehl, Danny O’Connell and a blind draw at 3-under par.

  • John Green wins Super Senior Championship

    John Green, of Ocean Isle Beach, won the super senior division in the Carolinas PGA Senior Championship.

    The two-day tourney was played July 28-29 at the Thistle Golf Club at Sunset Beach. The Carolinas PGA Senior Championship is a 36-hole stroke play championship open to all senior PGA and members residing in North and South Carolina. The Championship was played on the McKay Course for the front nine and the Cameron Course for the back.

    The book “A Better Man” was just published. The subtitle is “True American Heroes Speak to Young Men on Love, Power, Pride and What It Really Means to Be a Man.”

    I read it in two days. This book is not just for young men and boys, but for everyone who wants to learn about real modern heroes.

Winning on a match of cards on second hole with a score of 116 were Larry Bollinger, Hal Riebesehl, Dan O’Connell and Stu Cleveland. Low gross: Paul Mical and Stu Cleveland, 84; Bob Byrne and Jim Beairsto, 85. Low nets: Beairsto, 66; Michal, 67; Byrne, Cleveland and Bollinger, 68. Golfer of the week was Paul Michal.

  • North Carolina's beautiful, diverse landscape: Visiting the Waynesville Inn

    North Carolina is a fabulous state. The east has hundreds of miles of beaches and hundreds of golf courses. The rolling hills of the midlands boasts horse farms, thriving cities, university complexes and more golf courses.

    The far western part of the state is mountainous. The Great Smoky Mountains National Park straddles the border of North Carolina and Tennessee, and has more golf courses.

    The Brick Landing Plantation Ladies Golf Association played a circle nine game July 2. Players circled three par-3s, three par-4s and three par-5s prior to play. Total of circled holes, minus one-half handicap, determined the winners.
