  • Golf tournaments

    Coast Guard tourney is Dec. 7
    The second annual DILI golf tournament begins at 10 a.m. Dec. 7 at Echo Farms Golf and County Club. The Wilmington Navy League is the host and the tourney benefits the Fallen Heroes scholarship fund and a Coast Guard scholarship fund at Cape Fear Community College.
    Entry fee is $75 per golfer, $300 per four-golfer team, and includes dinner. Registration is 9-10 a.m. Pearl Harbor Remembrance ceremony is at

    Beachcombers
    The Beachcombers played Friday at Cypress Bay. Nets: Dennis McCann, 66; Bob Smith, 70. Team two nets: Larry Cecil, Bob Byrne, Dan O’Connell and McCann, 120  (24-under par). Golfer of the week is McCann.

  • Piperettes play Sadie Hawkins tourney

    The Piperettes played their annual Sadie Hawkins Tournament Nov. 10. Thirty-six members invited a partner other than the spouse to play an 18-hole, alternate-shot tournament. The field was divided into four flights.
    Flight 1: 1. Diane Rauch and Bobby Bryce 67; 2. Dan Copeland and Jane Duvall, 68; 3. Ed Killgoar and Liz fox, 73; 4. Ron Robichaud and Mary Dickerson, 73.

    Tee off for veterans set for Nov. 24
    On Nov. 24, Rolling Thunder SC3 will play its annual golf tournament at Crown Park Golf Course. It will be a captain’s choice with a shotgun start at 10 a.m. The fee is $60 per person, $240 per team. There will be a 50-50 drawing, door prizes and dinner to follow immediately after the tournament at the VFW Post 10804, 111 Highway 57, Little River, S.C.   • Story, Carano win Ocean Ridge tourney

    The Ocean Ridge Ladies Golf Association played its annual fall member-member tournament Nov. 7 and Nov. 12 on Panther’s Run and Lion’s Paw.
    The tournament consisted of four nine-hole formats: Nine holes of captain’s choice,  nine holes of alternate shot, nine holes of duck soup and nine holes of better-net of partner.

  • Scores, highlights of area golf leagues

    On Oct. 25, the format was count two best balls. In first with a score of -26 was the team of George Edwards, Bernie Gruzlewski, Jim Pope and Les Craft. In second was the team of Al Bloom, Chuck Hornfeck, Dave Harper and Ron Arvidson.
     On Nov. 1 the format was count one ball on the par 5s, two balls on the par 4s and three balls on the par 3s. The winning team at -32 was Al Bloom, Mike Prokop, Chuck Hornfeck, and Jim Pope.

  • Give thanks for our golf course superintendents

    Once in a while, I run into someone who thinks golf course superintendents are grass cutters and nothing more. They think these guys have a cushy job, sitting on a mower all day with none of the stress of corporate America.
    Wrong, wrong, wrong. Golf course superintendents are highly educated specialists who are in charge of multimillion-dollar businesses. It’s almost like owning a farm, except your product is complex, alive and on display year round as golfers play their favorite sport.

  • Zack Byrd: Thriving, surviving and hoping for the best

    It’s been a mixed bag for Zack Byrd this year. Highs and lows, with Murphy’s Law working overtime to thwart his efforts to become a PGA touring pro.
    Zack is from Calabash, a junior phenomenon who cut his teeth on the long, treacherous bunker-filled Carolina Shores Golf Course. Home-schooled, Zack played in junior golf events thrughout the country and went to Coastal Carolina University on a golf scholarship. During each of the four years Zack attended, CCU won the Big South Championship.

  • Bergstrom and Heroux win golf club championships

    Below are profiles of the women’s golf club champions are Carolina National and Farmstead-Meadowlands.
    Carolina National—Linda Bergstrom. This champion hails form Connecticut, where she worked for 25 years selling optical equipment. She and her husband were also competitive skiers, competing in NASTAR races all over the United States and in Europe.  
    “We’re golfers now,” she said  “Skiing can be dangerous as you get older.”
