    Sandpiper Bay plays club championship
    The Sandpiper Bay Golf and Country Club played its annual men’s and women’s club championship tournaments the week of Sept. 9. The women played on Sept. 11 and Sept. 13. Overall gross winner: Judy Nicoletti. Overall net winner: Jane Duvall. Flight 1, gross: Candace Cochrane; net: Diane Rauch. Flight 2, gross: Ella Mae Brooks; net: Peggy Donawick. Flight 3, gross: Angela Nicholson; net: Barb DeMore.

    American Legion Post 186 in Little River, S.C., is hosting a family and friends par-3 golf tournament on Sept. 22. If you can play putt-putt you are invited to this getting to know local veterans and families golf outing.

  • Sea Trail plays member tourney

    The Sea Trail LGA member-member tourney was played Sept. 12 on the Byrd Course and Sept. 13 on the Maples Course.
    The overall winners were Janet Keppler and Marilyn Ferguson with a combined score of 155.25. Second were Madeline Dubas and Denise Kenny at 160.75.
    Captain’s choice was played on Byrd Course holes 1-9. First were Louisa Clatterbuck and Birgit Carpenter, 25.25. Second were Virginia Foulds and Diane Scheck, 26.5.

  • Ocean Ridge LGA has cancer fundraiser

    The Ocean Ridge Ladies’ Golf Association was host of its annual cancer rally Sept. 10 to benefit the Bolivia office of the North Carolina Breast and Cervical Cancer Control Program (BCCCP). A golf tournament and Walkathon comprised the fundraiser. The golf tournament, played on Lion’s Paw Golf Course, was a captain’s choice and was open to men and women.

  • Scores, highlights of area golf leagues

    Beachcombers
    The Beachcombers played a two-nets tournament Friday at Crow Creek. The winners with a score of 114 (-30) were Fread Ortiz, Bob Byrne, Bill McDavit and Sid Silver. In second 118 (-26) were Jim Beairsto, Bob Smith, Tom Culverwell and Gary Gutheil. Low rounds: Reese Evans 78, Bill McDavit 84, Gary Gutheil 85 and Sid Silver 88. Met: Bill McDavit, 62. He also had an eagle on hole No. 9 and was voted golfer of the week.

  • Sloup, South win golf tourney

    Staff Report

    In the second conference golf tourney of the season, South Brunswick junior Ashley Sloup shot a 3-over-par 39 Sept. 10 on the Members Club Cate Nine at St. James Plantation in leading the Cougars to the team victory.
    Sophomore Janzen Jones and freshman Jordan Saunders each shot 52s for the Cougars, who finished at 143.
    North Brunswick was second at 158. Jennifer Basker shot a 51 and was third overall. Emily Lamm a 52 and Julia Ganey a 55.

  • Golf Gab chooses the 10 Most Annoying Golfers

    If you’ve played golf for any time at all, you’ve run across some very annoying people. I’ve played for 40 years (oh my gosh, has it been that long?), and I’ve seen it all. I’ve played in league days, in charity events, in interclub matches and sometimes with strangers on business and pleasure trips.
    Golf is not like going to the movies or out to lunch. In those cases, you usually pick out the folks you want to spend time with.

    The Beachcombers played a Stableford tournament Sept. 7 at Cypress Bay. The winners with a score of +23.5 were Bob Smith, Sid Silver, Bob Brownley and Fred Ortiz. In second at +12 were Jim Beairsto, Stu Cleveland and Gary Gutheil. Low rounds: Sid Silver 77, Reese Evans 81, Gary Gutheil 85 and Stu Cleveland 87. Low nets: Sid Silver 60 and Stu Cleveland 68. Sid Silver is voted golfer of the week with 12 points over his quota.

  • Lockwood Folly raises funds for ovarian cancer research

    There are dozens of charity tournaments each year in Brunswick County. Hard-working, concerned committee members and donors support important causes each week: Susan G. Komen for the Cure, AMVETs, the American Cancer Society, Paws Ability, Habitat for Humanity, Lower Cape Fear Hospice, The First Tee, Hope Harbor Home, local fire departments, schools, bands, college scholarships and hunger programs are only a few of the many recipients of our golfers’ largesse.  
    This is a generous, caring community and we should be proud of our work to help others.
