  • Lockwood Folly raises funds for ovarian cancer research

    There are dozens of charity tournaments each year in Brunswick County. Hard-working, concerned committee members and donors support important causes each week: Susan G. Komen for the Cure, AMVETs, the American Cancer Society, Paws Ability, Habitat for Humanity, Lower Cape Fear Hospice, The First Tee, Hope Harbor Home, local fire departments, schools, bands, college scholarships and hunger programs are only a few of the many recipients of our golfers’ largesse.  
    This is a generous, caring community and we should be proud of our work to help others.

  • First Tee concludes Summer Tour

    The First Tee’s mini-version of the FedEx Cup, the Summer Tour, drew to a close Aug. 13-14 following championship rounds at hosts Ocean Ridge Golf Club and the Thistle Golf Club.

  • Dave Kelley gets some respect, wins Schaffler Invitational

    Dave Kelley won the Lockwood Folly Golden Boys’ seventh annual Schaffler Invitational tournament and the coveted Rodney Dangerfield plaid jacket with a 12-under par score.
    Played on Aug. 23, Aug. 25 and Aug. 27, the rain-shortened event also saw Doug Wilburn take home the ersatz Masters Green blazer with a second-place 9-under finish. Jerry Pascale came in third at 8 under.
    Rain poured or threatened all days and drenched the awards ceremony, but the 24 entrants played through it with stoic grace.

  • Meadlowlands reopens after renovation

    Representatives of National Golf Management have announced the reopening of Meadowlands Golf Club after a three-month renovation. Meadowlands is one of 22 Prime Times Signature Courses owned or managed by the company.
    In about 100 days, the maintenance staff at Meadowlands Golf Club, led by superintendent David Pridgen, converted the TifDwarf Bermuda greens to a more advanced TifEagle variety of the grass, which thrives in warm climates.

  • Brick Landing hosts interclub match

    After being closed for two years and undergoing extensive renovations under its new ownership, the Brick Landing men finally was host an interclub match and played to a 30-30 tie against Brierwood.
    During the time that Brick Landing was closed, its men’s sports club used Brierwood as its home course for some matches.
    Jim Barrett was in charge of the interclub for Brick Landing.
    “We all played hard, and the matches were up and down all day,” he said.

    Coastal Shag Club tourney Sept. 8
    A $10,000 prize for making a hole-in-one at the 17th hole at Brierwood Golf Club is the main attraction in the fourth annual Coastal Shag Club charity golf tournament. Sept. 8 at Brierwood. Breakfast is at 8 a.m. The shotgun start at 9 a.m.

    Beachcombers
    The Beachcombers played a 1-2-3 tournament on Friday at Eagle Nest Golf Club. The winners with a score of 125 (-27) were Ton Culverwell, Sid Silver, Dennis Davidson and Bill Cameron. In second at 136 were Jim Beairsto, Matt Beairsto, Bob Brownley and Bob Smith. Gross: Matt Beairsto 79, Sid Silver 80, Gary Gutheil 86, Jim Beairsto and Bill Cameron 88. Net: Bill Cameron and Sid Silver 62, Jim Beairsto 66, Tom Culverwell and Matt Beairsto 69. Bill Cameron is golfer of the week.

  • Yadkin Valley: Golf and grapes

    In this column I sometimes have the opportunity to write about people and places outside of Brunswick County. It all started years ago when Gene and I were getting ready to go on a cross-country golf trip and I was struggling to get four columns written before our departure.  
    Ben Carlson (then editor of the Beacon) said, “Why don’t you just write from the road and email the articles and photos to us? Tell our readers where you’ve been and about the golf courses you’ve played. They might enjoy it.”

  • Mason wins Sea Trail club championship

    The Sea Trail LGA club championship was played Aug. 20 on the Byrd Course, Aug. 22 on the Maples Course and Aug. 23 on the Jones Course.
    The club champion is Joan Mason, who shot 84-82-91—257. Runner-up is Marti Kennedy, who shot 85-94-88—267.
    Flight 1 gross winner is Mary Alice Jerome, who shot 86-87-90—263. Net winner is Nancy Flaherty, who shot 69-75-70—214.
    Flight 2 gross winner is Pat Lupi, who shot 93-103-104—300. Net winner is Janet Keppler, who shot 72-79-77—228.

    Brierwood couples
    With a match of cards, the team of Dan Perry, Cheryl Perry, Bill Billie and Jean Billie came in first at 13-under par Aug. 18. The team of Wayne McGlothlin, Nancy McGlothlin, Bob Nobes and Marianne Nobes came in second, also at 13 under.
