  • Yadkin Valley: Golf and grapes

In this column I sometimes have the opportunity to write about people and places outside of Brunswick County. It all started years ago when Gene and I were getting ready to go on a cross-country golf trip and I was struggling to get four columns written before our departure.
Ben Carlson (then editor of the Beacon) said, “Why don’t you just write from the road and email the articles and photos to us? Tell our readers where you’ve been and about the golf courses you’ve played. They might enjoy it.”

  • Ocean Ridge Plantation: It’s not just golf

Contrary to popular belief, golf course communities are not just about golf. I’ve heard people say, “Why would I want to live on a golf course? I don’t play golf!”
    Wrong, wrong, wrong.
All of our golf course communities, from St. James in the north to Brunswick Plantation on the south, are bustling with dozens of activities that have nothing to do with golf.

  • Lady Di and her Court win Ocean Ridge Carolina Cup

The Ocean Ridge Ladies Golf Association played its annual Carolina Cup tournament, which is a three-day Ryder Cup format tournament. Because of rain, the tournament was a two-day event, Aug. 6 on Panther’s Run and Aug. 13 on Panther’s Run.

The Lockwood Folly Cup was played on Friday at Lockwood Folly Country Club and was cosponsored by the Men’s Golf Association and the Ladies’ Golf Association of Lockwood Folly.

  • Hope Harbor Home Tournament: Women helping women

Irene was my best friend growing up in a small Maryland town. We spent nights at each other’s houses, went to the same youth group at church, played endless games of Monopoly and talked on the phone for hours.
She got married and moved to Florida. I got married and moved to New Jersey.
When she was 24, Irene was stabbed to death on Christmas Eve by her husband. To make matters even worse, he did it in front of their two young children.
