  • Sandpiper Bay: Winning secrets to a successful club

    If you visit Sandpiper Bay, you will find the course filled, the practice range active with golfers taking lessons or hitting balls. The course is in excellent shape, the membership is growing.
    Other clubs are struggling, but Sandpiper Bay just keeps truckin’ along, winning awards, like being named 2010 Golf Course of the Year by the Myrtle Beach Area Golf Course Owners Association, rated Four Stars by Golf Digest Magazine.  
    Success comes when both management and membership care about the club, and that is what has happened at Sandpiper Bay.

  • Ronays win Ocean Ridge tournament

    James and J.K. Ronay won the 2012 Ocean Ridge Plantation men’s member-guest golf tournament.
    The tournament, which took place on Tiger’s Eye, started with two-person teams placed in flights based on their total combined handicaps. Five nine-hole best ball matches were played to determine the winner of each flight. The six flight winners plus three runner-up teams advanced to the shoot-out to determine the Member Guest champions.

    Price includes cart fee, greens fee and prizes. Cart attendant’s tip is not included in price.

    Brick Landing
    On June 28, the Brick Landing Nine Is Fine played its monthly game day. The game was prediction. Each player had to predict the final score she would receive after nine holes of golf. Dottie Leelike was the winner with an exact prediction.

  • Frank Berenyi creates helpful new gadget for golfers

    Frank Berenyi lives at Rivers Edge Golf Course in Shallotte. Like most retirees in this area, he is a busy, busy man.  
    Most men and women look forward to retirement after a hectic life in the trenches of the workforce. They’ve commuted by car, subway, or train every day. Some have had to fly here and abroad on business trips. That may sound glamorous, but traveling to several cities, states or even countries in a single week or month, can be totally exhausting.

    The journey through Scouting starts at a young age. As you advance through the ranks of Boys Scouts, you not only learn the basic Scouting skills but also gain experience, develop character and grow as a person. My time in Scouting has definitely influenced my way of life.
    To me, the Boy Scouts of America and The First Tee share the same values and goals: to increase life skills to better the individual participant.

  • Scores, highlights of area golf leagues

    Beachcomers
    The Beachcombers played a three-nets tournament on Friday at Black Bear. There was a tie for first at 196 (-20). Winners on a match of cards were Dennis McCann, Sid Silver, Ed Nocella and Reggie Auten. In second were Bob Byrne, Fred Ortiz, Ed Hennessey and Gary Gutheil. Lowest rounds: Gary Gutheil 82, Sid Silver 86 and Bob Byrne 89. Lowest nets: Sid Silver 63, Gary Gutheil 64, Fred Ortiz 66 Bob Byrne 68 and Dick Cecil 69. Sid Silver is golfer of the week.

  • Celebrating the graduating seniors of The First Tee

    Each year excellent young men and women graduate from The First Tee of Brunswick County and move out into the world. They are bright and enthusiastic. They know how to play the game of golf, but most importantly, they have learned The First Tee Life Skills and Core Values that will stay with them far into the future.
    The Nine Core Values of The First Tee are honesty, integrity, sportsmanship, respect, confidence, responsibility, perseverance, courtesy and judgment.

  • Verhoosky is Lockwood Folly champ

    Mike Verhoosky won the Lockwood Folly Golf Association club championship June 6.
    Bill Schmidt was second in the two-day tournament, which was played in a steady rain both days.
    Carl Teagardner was first and Joe Geise was second in net scores.
    In the senior division, Al Ayling was first, Bland Clarke second and Mike Newland third. Clarke had the highlight of the tournament, scoring a hole-in-one on the 11th hole.
    In net scoring, Pat Hogan was first, George Gisel second and Dave Notter third.
