    Tourney April 1 is for Relay for Life
    Town Creek Elementary School is sponsoring a golf tourney April 20 at Magnolia Greens and the proceeds benefit Relay for Life. The shotgun start is 8 a.m. The fee is $60 per golfer, $240 per team, and covers lunch. To register, call Stella Tucker at (910) 253-6500 or email stucker@bcswan.net by April 1.

  • Trojans’ Patterson wins golf tourney

    Staff Report

    West Brunswick freshman Landon Patterson was the only golfer to break 80 as he won the season-opening high school golf tourney March 11 at Whiteville Country Club.
    Patterson shot a 79 on the par-72, 6,329-yard course.
    Other scorers for West: sophomore Drew Boyer, 83; senior Holt Durham, 85; sophomore Dylan Howard, 85; sophomore Cole Snyder, 86; and junior Zack Flaccavento, 88.

  • Ocean Ridge Hotop Scramble

    The Ocean Ridge Men’s Golf League played its annual two-day scramble tournament March 11 at Lion’s Paw and March 13 at Panther’s Run. The tournament was named The Hotop Scramble in honor of Bill Hotop, who died last year. This was Hotop’s favorite tournament. Diana Hotop awarded all the prizes to the winning teams.

    Beachcombers
    The Beachcombers played a three-nets tournament Friday at Eastport. The winners with a score of 186 (-24) were Ed Nocella, Bob Smith, Bob Brownley and Dennis McCann. In second were Sid Silvers, Bob Byrne, Jim Beairsto and Jim Ritter at 187 (-23). Gross: Sid Silvers, 81; Stu Cleveland, 84; and Jim Ritter, 88. Net: Ed Nocella, 59; Stu Cleveland, 60; Jim Ritter, 63; Ed Redman, 64; Sid Silver and Bob Cecil, 66; Jim Beairsto and Bob Brownley, 68; and Larry Cecil, 69. Ed Nocella is golfer of the week.

  • Gatlinburg, Oh, Gatlinburg

    Gene and I have the best of all worlds. We live in Brunswick County on the Carolina Coast (temperate year-round climate, lots of golf courses, fabulous beaches, great seafood, boating, fishing, plus Myrtle Beach, S.C., and Wilmington are a short drive away).
    Yet, we have another alternative world we visit several times a year. That world exists in Gatlinburg, Tenn., at the base of the Great Smoky Mountains.

    The Renegades played their St. Patrick’s Day Tournament March 7 at Beachwood Golf Course. The format was four nets.
    First: Kathy Hahl, Sue Greiner, George Bridges and Art Hahl, 261. Second: Karen Hertling, Dolores Sanborn, Don Rose, and Gary Hertling, 262.
    Third: Deb Courtemanche, Jean Falls, Jim Courtemanche and Doug Falls, 279.
    Fewest putts among men, Gary Hertling, 27; among women, Teddy Altreuter, 30.
    Closest to pin at 4 (men) was Mal MacRaild; at 18 (women), Marlene Cleary. Birdies: Deb Courtemanche at 4.

  • Winding River MGA has opening day

    The Winding River Men’s Golf Association played its opening-day event March 6 at Carolina National. The event had 116-member participants (29 teams) playing in a four-man team scramble.
    Finishing in first were Jim Crane, Tim Koch, Paul Buckner and Bob Collins. Second-place finishers were Bob Allen, Lee Peters, David Johnson Jr. and Phil Sloat.

  • The First Tee Future Generations Tournament: Big, bigger, biggest

    The Future Generations Tournament for the benefit of The First Tee of Brunswick County is June 1 at St. James Plantation.
    It’s a world of fun for a great cause and the biggest charity golf event in the region, so come on out.
    Imagine 540 golfers playing simultaneously on the 81 holes at St. James Plantation—and playing 18 holes in just more than four hours. Then, imagine those people, plus volunteers and guests (more than 600 of them), getting their food served to them in fewer than 20 minutes.

  • The First Tee Player Card: Green fees at a big discount

    It’s the hottest selling golf item in Brunswick County: It’s The First Tee player card.
    The 2013 edition of the player card has been on sale for 12 weeks and thousands already have been sold.  
    “We’re fast hitting our limit with not many left to sell,” said Rebecca Albin, executive director of The First Tee of Brunswick County. “Since we started selling them in December, they’ve been flying off of the shelf.”
