  • The First Tee Player Card: Green fees at a big discount

    It’s the hottest selling golf item in Brunswick County: It’s The First Tee player card.
    The 2013 edition of the player card has been on sale for 12 weeks and thousands already have been sold.  
    “We’re fast hitting our limit with not many left to sell,” said Rebecca Albin, executive director of The First Tee of Brunswick County. “Since we started selling them in December, they’ve been flying off of the shelf.”

  • Cameryn Smith receives national recognition

    The First Tee’s Cameryn Smith was one of 32 young golfers selected from among several hundred applicants to attend The First Tee Outstanding Participant Summit in Nashville, Tenn.
    This inaugural youth symposium “picked the best of the best from among our chapters from throughout the country,” said Rebecca Albin, executive director of The First Tee of Brunswick County.

    Tourney April 1 for Relay for Life
    Town Creek Elementary School is sponsoring a golf tourney April 20 at Magnolia Greens and the proceeds benefit Relay for Life. The shotgun start is 8 a.m. The fee is $60 per golfer, $240 per team, and covers lunch. To register, call Stella Tucker at (910) 253-6500 or email stucker@bcswan.net by April 1.

    Beachcombers
    The Beachcombers played the last of their four-round old vs. young tournament Friday at Cypress Bay and old guys were victorious for the fourth straight year. Gross: Reese Evans 85, Stu Cleveland 87, Bob Byrne, Jim Fitzner and Gary Gutheil 89. Net: Stu Cleveland 64, Ed Nocella 66, Tom Culverwell and Hal Riebesehl 67 and Bob Byrne 68. Ed Nocella is golfer of the week.

    Coastal Carolina University is one of 19 schools in the country that offers Professional Golf Management as a degree option. This is an intense 4½-year program wherein the student graduates with a B.A. and a PGA certification at the same time.

  • Ocean Ridge plays Stableford tourney

    The Ocean Ridge men’s golf league played its annual four-man team Stableford Tournament Feb. 18 and Feb. 20. The two-day event had 52 participants (13 teams) and played Lion’s Paw and Panther’s Run.
    The scoring was based on all four players counting -1 for a net double bogey or higher, 0 points for net bogey, 1 point for net par, 3 points for net birdie, 5 points for net eagle and 8 points for a net double eagle.

    The Beachcombers played a rain-shortened (nine holes) cha-cha-cha tournament Friday at Crow Creek. The winners with a score of 64 (-12) were Bob Brownley, Jim Ritter, Ed Nocella and Gary Gutheil. Second were Reese Evans, Bob Smith and Stu Cleveland at 72 (-4). Bob Brownley short a 47, net 30, and is golfer of the week.

    “The rules are your friend,” remember that, fellow golfers. “The rules are your friend.”
    The Rules of Golf are created by the United States Golf Association and published in a small booklet updated every four years. Golf rules were established to sort out difficulties and differences of opinion as to how the game is played. They are the official arbiter of the game.
