  • The First Tee’s Winter Tour

    During December and January, 17 ace-, eagle- and birdie-certified youngsters of The First Tee Brunswick County participated in the second annual Winter Tour played on the four golf courses at Ocean Ridge Plantation.
    Participants took part in clinics and competed in five events in three flights by age and gender, earning points to determine the flight champions. The players included some of the best young golfers in Brunswick County.

  • Scores, highlights of area golf leagues

    Beachcombers
    The Beachcombers played a two-man team best-net tournament Friday at Eastport. Six teams all finished below par and within one shot for each position. The winners with a 56 were Jim Ritter and Bob Smith. In second were Bud Dunham and Tom Culverwell at 57. In third at 58 were Bob Byrne and Gary Gutheil. Low round was Gary Gutheil at 81. Low net was Jim Ritter at 61. Jim Ritter is golfer of the week.

  • A new team is polishing The Pearl golf course complex

    Good things are happening at The Pearl golf course complex. New A1/A4 bent grass greens have been installed on the West Course; trees and shrubs and pampas grass are being trimmed and cut back. Fertilizing, spraying, weeding and mulching are ongoing. Tees have been flattened and re-sodded.
    Cart-path repair is coming soon; bunkers will be renovated. A membership is being established. An amateur tour is in the works.

    Beachcombers
    The Beachcombers played a Stableford tournament Friday at Eagle Nest. The winners at +12 were Bob Smith, Bob Brownley, Sid Silvers and Reggie Auten. Taking second were Ed Redman, Reese Evans, Hal Riebesehl and Jim Ritter at +11.5. Gross: Reese Evans 83, Hal Riebesehl 87, Stu Cleveland and Sid Silvers 89. Net: Hal Riebesehl 61, Stu Cleveland 67 and Bob Smith 68. Riebesehl, 88, shot an 87 and is golfer of the week.

  • Mixing golf and romance

    Love and golf are often linked. Yeah, I’ve heard all those stories of guys who are always out playing golf with the guys, leaving their forlorn and neglected wives or girlfriends at home.
    More often, the game of golf can be the cement that holds a marriage together. It has for mine.
    When my husband, Gene, and I met at Syracuse University, he had been playing golf since he was 8 and had a single digit handicap. As I got to know him and his Phi Kappa Psi brothers, I became the beer runner for their fraternity golf matches. Basically, I became a golf groupie.

    Tournament of Angels set for Feb. 9
    The 15th Annual Golf Tournament of Angels is Feb. 9 at Tidewater Golf Club at North Myrtle Beach, S.C. This tournament supports a Christian early education program for preschoolers. The cost is $75 and covers golf and cart fees, hot buffet breakfast, box lunch, light desserts, free mulligan per player, closest to the pin, longest drive and hole-in-one prize.

    On Jan. 31, playing two best balls, the team of Mike Prokop, George Edwards, Jim Pope and a player by draw, came in first at -5.

    Stableford results Jan. 31. Azalea-Magnolia side: First was Jim Kocsi, +11. Tying for second and third were Stan Drezek and Marty Krygiel, +5. Fourth was George Spencer, +4. Fifth was Lenny DiGiacomo, +3.
