  • Trojan golfers shoot in 70s at conference tournament

    WHITEVILLE—The West Brunswick golf team finished one stroke ahead of host West Bladen on April 12 at Land O’ Lakes Golf Club. Three Trojan golfers shot in the 70s to seal a second-place finish, one stroke ahead of the host Knights.
    For the tournament, the conference team scores were South Brunswick 307, West Brunswick 311, host West Bladen 312, Whiteville 337, North Brunswick 351, East Bladen 393 and South Columbus 445.

  • West golf team second in tourney

    Host West Bladen and West Brunswick finished ahead of conference leader South Brunswick in a conference tourney March 31 at Carolina Sands at White Lake.
    For the tournament, West Bladen finished at 321, West Brunswick 323, South Brunswick 334, Whiteville 343, North Brunswick 376, East Bladen 385 and South Columbus 487.

  • Richard Mandell: Designer in sync with today's issues

    One of the things I enjoy the most about writing this column is the chance to meet new people in the world of golf. Last fall I attended the Carolinas Golf Course Superintendent’s Association meeting in Myrtle Beach, S.C., and took the course “How To Do More With Less: Renovation and Construction,” taught by Richard Mandell, a well-known golf course architect with offices in Pinehurst.

    Club 25 began its 2010 season with a tournament March 22 at the Founders Club at St. James Plantation. Elaine Pipino from Carolina National led the excitement of the day with a hole-in-one on the 97-yard 16th hole.

    The first flight was won by Barb Eckroth (The Legends) with an 83. She was followed by Mary Barclay (St. James). Dale Calhoon (Brick Landing) and Shari Hodson (The Lakes) tied for third. Barb Guhl (Pine Valley) finished fifth and Dianne Belair (Prestwick) sixth.

  • Rounds4Research: Great idea, great cause spreading throughout the Southeast

    “Necessity is the mother of invention” is a saying we’ve all heard at one time or another, and nowhere is that saying truer than in the Rounds4Research initiative of the Carolinas Golf Course Superintendents Association.

    Rounds of golf at more than 550 golf courses in North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, Georgia and Texas will be auctioned off online from April 7-14 through its Web site, Rounds4Research.com. The funds raised will provide money for turfgrass research.

  • Seabrook Island Club: a long struggle, but reaping the rewards

    Last weekend, I traveled to the Seabrook Island Club for the spring meeting of the Carolina Golf Reporters Association. For the first time, the meeting took place jointly with the South Carolina Golf Course Ratings Panel, and it was a blast.

    There were awards, meetings and social events during the weekend. Each day we played the courses at Seabrook.

    On Saturday, I met Brian Thelan, the head golf professional at Seabrook and heard the amazing story of how this beautiful private club came to be.

  • The Founders Club hosts St. James Plantation Collegiate Invitational tournament

    On March 13-14, six NCAA Division II and III golf teams and one NAIA team played in the second annual St. James Plantation Collegiate Invitational at the Founders Club. Two other schools played elsewhere to make the total nine.

    Rita DuGan, Sharon Beavers, Dennis Shea, and Wayne McGlothlin were first at 1-under par in the Brierwood nine-hole mixed scramble March 10. Finishing second at even par was the team of Marian Johnson, Nancy McGlothlin, Bob Janovic and Bob Nobes. The team of Liz Boyer, Honey Gruzlewski, Fran Thomas, and Randy Coates tied for third place at 1-over par with the team of Marianne Nobes, Glen Green, Ralph Trimmer and Larry Boyer.
